About the Department

Catawba County Social Services is seeking a compassionate and resourceful individual to fill the role of Social Work Assistant. This position provides vital case assistance and direct support to social workers serving adults, many of whom are marginally functioning or under guardianship of the County, to help them live as independently and safely as possible in the community.


In this role, you will work closely with social work staff to implement individualized case plans addressing a variety of needs such as housing, budgeting, nutrition, medication monitoring, hygiene, medical care, and accessing community resources and public benefits. The work you do directly supports adults in maintaining stability, dignity, and independence in the least restrictive environment possible.

Position Duties

  • Assist clients in obtaining and understanding medical services and recommendations; provide transportation to medical appointments and pharmacies as needed
  • Educate, demonstrate, and assist with household management, nutrition, and hygiene, including shopping and meal planning for special diets
  • Assist clients in locating suitable and affordable housing, furnishing their homes, and maintaining safe living conditions
  • Develop and manage budgets for assigned payee clients, including bill payments, allowances, and accurate recordkeeping
  • Assist clients in completing applications and recertifications for benefits such as Medicaid, SSI/SSDI, Veterans Affairs, and housing assistance
  • Teach and demonstrate daily living skills and assist clients in achieving short- and long-term goals in partnership with social workers
  • Utilize agency systems and mobile devices to complete accurate documentation, case notes, and reports on a timely basis
  • Stay informed about community resources and develop strong partnerships with service providers and partner agencies
  • Assist veterans in understanding and coordinating services available through both local agencies and the Veterans Affairs system
  • Provide transportation and assistance for errands, shopping, and other essential activities to support daily living

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field; OR
  • Associate’s degree in Human Services and 1 year of experience in performing casework or other similar tasks; OR
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and 3 years of experience in performing casework or other similar tasks

Other Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record (Driving is an essential function of this position)
  • Ability to work independently and manage a flexible schedule
  • Excellent communication skills to work effectively with clients, social workers, medical professionals, and community partners
  • Strong budgeting, time management, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of local community resources and ability to educate clients about their use
  • Ability to work with adults who may have physical and/or mental health challenges
  • Solid computer and mobile device skills (tablets, phones, etc.)
  • This is considered light work, lifting up to 20 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally.
