Position Details:

The Opportunity:

As a Grounds and Nursery Services Specialist 4, you’ll take the lead in creating and maintaining safe, clean, and beautiful outdoor spaces across the WSU Pullman Campus. You’ll use your skills to manage turf care, litter control, plant bed installation and upkeep, tree planting, pruning, and removal. You’ll also operate, maintain, and install computerized automatic irrigation systems to keep our landscapes thriving.

In this role, you’ll guide and support team members, especially during snow and ice control operations. You’ll oversee shop equipment and vehicle maintenance, lead safety initiatives, and conduct regular area audits to monitor service levels and identify issues like pest or disease damage. Your expertise will help shape our campus environment through thoughtful recommendations on turf, plant, and tree installation, removal, and replacement.

Additional Information:

This is a full time (100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime eligible.

Monthly Salary: $3,581 to $4,771 | Range 40 (Steps A - M) | Successful candidates are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Two to three years of experience in gardening, plant care, landscape construction and grounds maintenance OR equivalent education/experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working with equipment required for grounds maintenance activities; variety of hand and motorized tools such as, but not limited to: pruners, loppers, shovels, rakes, hoes, mowers, blowers, edgers, litter picker, chainsaw, trimmers, string trimmer and sprayers.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed and work in all weather conditions.

  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid, Public Applicators Pesticide license.

  • Ability to work collaboratively across work groups in order to deliver positive outcomes.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of lead or supervisory experience.

  • Arborist Certification.

  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) endorsement.

  • Must be able to work and create a harmonious work environment.

  • Experience with Aim Work Management and Workday Systems.

  • Demonstrated experience working with computerized based business information systems and experience with MS Word and Excel.

  • Demonstrated experience working with computerized irrigation systems and personal computers used to control computerized irrigation software programs.

  • A professionally recognized certification in grounds maintenance (National Association for Landscape Professionals, Professional Grounds Maintenance Society, International Society of Arboriculture, etc.).
