WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR


The Director, Security & Operations provides strategic leadership and long-term vision for the GRAMMY Museum’s core operational functions, including security, facility management, and operational stability. This role ensures the Museum operates at the highest standards of safety, service, and operational excellence—safeguarding people, property, and reputation while delivering a world-class visitor experience.

As the head of Security & Operations, you will partner across all departments to anticipate future needs, strengthen infrastructure, and advance operational innovation. You will set the strategic direction for safety, security, emergency preparedness, and facility management, ensuring that all programs, systems, and policies reflect best-in-class practices and compliance with applicable regulations.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Strategic Leadership & Planning

  • Develop and execute a forward-looking operational strategy that aligns with the Museum’s mission, visitor experience goals, and long-term growth plans.
  • Lead strategic planning for security, safety, facilities, and operational efficiency, including capital improvements and sustainability initiatives.
  • Provide thought leadership and recommendations to senior leadership on risk management, security trends, and operational innovations.
  • Define performance metrics and outcomes to measure the effectiveness of operational programs and drive continuous improvement.

Safety, Security & Risk Management

  • Oversee enterprise-level security and emergency management programs, ensuring preparedness, resilience, and compliance with all safety regulations.
  • Establish and maintain proactive risk assessment frameworks to anticipate and mitigate threats to staff, visitors, collections, and facilities.
  • Serve as the Museum’s primary liaison with law enforcement, fire, life safety, and emergency management agencies to ensure seamless coordination and response readiness.
  • Champion a culture of safety, awareness, and accountability across all levels of the organization.

Operations & Infrastructure Oversight

  • Provide executive oversight of building operations, mechanical systems, and technology infrastructure to ensure reliability, sustainability, and visitor comfort.
  • Guide facility maintenance and construction projects, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, timelines, and budgets.
  • Oversee vendor relationships and service contracts, ensuring strong performance, fiscal responsibility, and alignment with institutional standards.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead, inspire, and develop the Security & Operations teams, fostering professional growth, operational excellence, and a culture of respect and inclusion.
  • Partner with the Guest Experience and Programs teams to integrate operational strategy with the Museum’s visitor and programmatic goals.
  • Collaborate with People & Culture and senior leadership to shape policies that promote workplace safety, accessibility, and employee well-being.
  • Represent the Museum’s operational interests in strategic planning, capital projects, and cross-department initiatives.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 10 to15 years of experience in museum security and/or operations with 5+ years in a leadership position.
  • Proven performance in managing all phases of building operations and security, including complex electronic security, mechanical and HVAC systems.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Board Members, industry leaders and supporters, artists, and special guests.
  • Expert level knowledge of fire/life/safety systems and protocol. Working knowledge of laws and regulations related to security operations.
  • A high level of professionalism with the ability to manage a range of people, needs, and high-pressure scenarios.
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with the ability to foster a safe and positive workplace culture.
  • A sincere love of music, customer service, and engagement.
  • Ability to build and manage a growing team of employees, contractors, and vendors.
  • Understanding of changing industry norms, safety and security trends, and best practices in the museum space, both onsite and remote.
  • Strong familiarity with OSHA, fire/life safety regulations, and other applicable compliance standards.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including written, verbal, and presentation abilities.
  • Ability and eagerness to thrive in a fast-paced environment with many competing priorities.
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The starting salary for this position is $95,600 to $106,500 per year, benchmarked against industry standards. Salaries for positions required to be in specific geographic locations reflect the corresponding labor market. 
 
The actual offer extended will depend on the candidate's experience, qualifications, and the role's requirements and will include our comprehensive benefits package (with medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401k match, generous paid time off, and more).
