Your Role
As an intern on the Corporate Financial Accounting & Reporting team, you’ll collaborate with experienced professionals to support financial accounting and reporting for Blue Shield of California and its subsidiaries. You’ll gain practical exposure to the full lifecycle of financial information—from transaction recording to reporting and analysis—within the healthcare insurance sector.
Key Focus: You’ll play a critical role in automating reconciliations, mapping data flows, analyzing data sets, and developing transaction matching rules. This project will expose you to complex IT ecosystems and healthcare data.
Responsibilities
Your Work
In this role, you will:
- Participate in projects to automate accounting processes and strengthen controls
- Draft financial statements for regulatory submission
- Analyze and explain trends
- Compile documentation to support internal and external audits
- Prepare journal entries and adjustments to record financial transactions
- Reconcile general ledger accounts, including research and resolve discrepancies
Qualifications
Your Knowledge and Experience
- Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in accounting, finance, economics, business analytics, or data science
- Familiarity with accounting principles and financial statements
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational skills, detail oriented
- Advanced proficiency in MS Excel (Power Pivot, formulas, macros)
- Ability to process map data flows and analyze raw data sets
- Self-motivated, eager to learn, and disciplined in time management
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must reside in California for the duration of the internship
- Preferred:
- Understanding of healthcare ecosystem, health plan and payer economics
- Familiarity with automation tools is preferred (SQL, Python, etc.)
Pay:
$25.00 per hour for Undergraduate
$30.00 per hour for Graduate

Our paid internship program is thoughtfully curated to provide students with experience and exposure to the health professional industry. Interns will be given the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real work projects, build meaningful relationships and connections within the organization, and experience our mission and enterprise goals through our program curriculum centered on our leadership model (Personal, People, Thought, and Results Leadership). Two Ways of Working:
- Hybrid (Default): Work from a business unit-approved office at least two (2) times per month (for roles below Director-level) or once per week (for Director-level roles and above). Exceptions:
o Member-facing and approved out-of-state roles remain remote.
o Employees living more than 50 miles from their assigned offices are expected to work with their managers on a plan for periodic office visits.

- On-Site: Work from a business unit-approved office an average of four (4) or more days a week.
