What You'll Do:
The Process Development Engineer is accountable for safely providing ongoing support and solutions for both new product developments and strategic manufacturing support projects related to thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The responsibilities of this role will be focused on providing technology support for key footwear OEMs, Most Effective Technology(MET), additive manufacturing, and regulatory-driven management of change. The candidate needs to be well rounded in the field of process engineering and with emphasis on chemical, mechanical, and process control technologies. The candidate is also expected to be well versed in process safety management principles and apply them routinely during their tenure. Prior experience with polymers and the extrusion process is considered a plus as well as experience with process automation and the application of statistical analysis tools. As a part of the PT organization, this role offers an opportunity to draw insight from both manufacturing and commercial functions of the Estane business.
What We're Looking For:
- Plan, analyze, and safely execute pilot plant extrusion line runs, including reactive TPU extrusion and resin compounding.
- Foster productive communication with Pilot Plant operations staff and lead by example in a coaching/mentoring environment.
- Foster professional relationships with Business partners including: Sales and Marketing, Product Management, Synthesis, Application, and Technology Services.
- Be comfortable with routine customer and supplier interactions while reinforcing Lubrizol’s reputation and protecting Intellectual Property.
- Support Estane UOI growth by practicing and advocating the use of business processes including: Most Effective Technology (MET), Pilot Plant Request (PPR) system, Manufacturing Authorization (MA) process, Product and Portfolio Management Process (PPMP), and other related processes.
- Actively participate in and lead by example in plant and corporate HSE initiatives including: Leader Standard Work (LSW), OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM), department safety meetings, and environmental initiatives.
- Participate in root cause analysis and ad-hoc incident investigations where necessary
- Support pilot line reliability improvements and commitment to continuous improvement by supporting and managing capital (CAPEX) improvements in both Brecksville and Avon Lake pilot plants.
- Continuously improve processes and capabilities by enhancing work flow and improve process automation (Emerson DeltaV and Osisoft PI data historian), using statistical analysis (DOE) and implementation of improved control strategies.
- Organize and lead multi-functional teams through influence and communicate/document outcomes.
Skills That Make a Difference:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related technical field.
- 2-5 years of manufacturing operations experience, OR participation in the Lubrizol Co-Op program
- Strong fundamental knowledge in chemical engineering principals with proven problem-solving abilities
- Strong project management skills utilizing stage-gate systems and job aids
- Strong “hands-on” mechanical and chemical process engineering skills
- Knowledge of chemical and polymer unit operations, including process and equipment design
- Knowledge of experimental design (DOE) and data analysis using fundamental statistical techniques and statistical software
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
- Ability to work with others at all levels and in multiple locations within the organization
- Experience managing both internal and external customer expectations
- Knowledge and application of SAP enterprise software
- Basic knowledge of thermoplastic polyurethane polymerization manufacturing and chemistry preferred
