The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill a 

Transit Driver (Non-CDL) (Transit Operator G) Grade G11 position in the Senior Transport Services.


PLEASE NOTE: THIS POSITION IS A LIMITED TERM GRANT FUNDED POSITION WITH BENEFITS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS & TRANSPORTATION

About the Position:

This is skilled craft work whereby incumbents of this class are responsible for safely operating a jet/vacuum truck along with other motorized medium to heavy equipment and complexity for storm drain systems and to perform manual work functions associated with the construction, maintenance and repair of related to stormwater infrastructures. A Jet-Vac Equipment Operator operates high-pressure water and vacuum trucks to clean and maintain storm drains, and other underground stormwater infrastructures such as inlets and manholes. Responsibilities include performing pre-trip inspections, safely operating specialized equipment, setting up job sites, removing debris, performing routine maintenance, and documenting services via tablets/iPads. This work involves exposure to hazards, risks, or discomforts typical of working with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, irritant chemicals, fumes or airborne particles. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to the elements. Ability to lift/ slide up to 90 pounds with assistance. This includes lifting, carrying, and pulling hoses, climbing on to the unit (12' high) for set up and minor maintenance, standing, kneeling or bending for long periods of time Ability to set up and operate Vacuum Flusher truck equipment units. Must be able Incumbents must wear and maintain a uniform and/or safety equipment such as hard hats, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, and gloves.  Work is performed under general supervision in the Office of Storm Drain Maintenance (OSDM). This position requires a Commercial Driver’s License-A (restricted or unrestricted) and DOT card at all times. All incumbents must possess the required licensure to operate light to heavy equipment/vehicles per DOT/FMCSA

About the Agency:

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

Position Duties


  • Safely operates non-CDL vehicles in passenger service for Call-a-Bus and/or PGC Link while adhering to department policies and federal, local, and state laws

  • Utilizes mobile transit technology to follow schedule and notify passengers of trip progression

  • Maintains communication by radio with Dispatch and Transit Service Coordinators to report service interruptions

  • Greet passengers and provide general customer service by responding to inquiries and providing general transit information

  • Assist passengers boarding/disembarking with wheelchairs or other mobility aids to include their proper securement

  • Ensures cleanliness of vehicle exterior/interior and fuels vehicle after each shift

  • Conducts routine inspections of assigned vehicle before/after use according to safety and operating procedures and reports any defects accordingly

  • Participate as an Essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities

  • Perform other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work

Minimum Qualifications


  • Graduation from high school or a GED equivalency
  • One (1) year of transit operation experience with direct customer service experience
An equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledges, skills and abilities may also be accepted

Conditions of Employment: Upon selection, the candidate must:

  • Possess, maintain, and submit a copy of Class "C" Driver's License

  • Submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration driving record

  • Possess closed-toe shoes that meet safety requirement for vehicle operations

  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency

  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable

  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable

  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave
