AnnualA. POSITION PURPOSE:
The Assistant Director of the Master Level Training Program is a member of the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) management team and multidisciplinary clinical team. CAPS Clinical Team directly contributes to student success by delivering integrated mental healthcare to SCU students. The Assistant Director of the Master Level Training Program oversees the operations of the MFT/PCC Practicum Training Program. This position is administratively focused along with clinical and programmatic supervisory responsibilities and direct clinical service responsibilities. CAPS is committed to the values of multiculturalism and social justice, and is dedicated to providing mental health services that are open to and accepting of every student we serve. This position supports the highest quality of mental health services to students while supporting the vision of the University to make student learning a central goal by facilitating the psychological well-being of the student body.
The position at CAPS holds a specialized and significant role. This role is in a unique position to hold administrative oversight of recruitment and selection of graduate level counseling students enrolled in the SCU Counseling Psychology program as well as providing clinical supervision to beginning therapists. Graduate students in this program are required to complete a clinical practicum as a graduation requirement. As such, the successful candidate should be comfortable in teaching and supporting graduate students with no prior clinical experience and be responsible for ensuring the ethical and legal compliance of all clinical activities. This role requires a substantial knowledge of BBS requirements as it relates to clinical supervision, quality control, and ethical management of one’s own license and supervisees working under it. The Assistant Director is responsible for video review of all recorded sessions, reviewing and signing off on all clinical documentation, and accurate records of all supervision and guidance provided for each client being treated by an unlicensed supervisee working under the license of a supervisor. In addition to the ethical and legal responsibilities assumed for each supervisee, the Assistant Director is expected to maintain a collaborative working relationship with the Counseling Psychology graduate program department to manage recruitment, selection, and provide ongoing feedback on student performance issues.

B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administration (50%)
- Assumes primary responsibility for the development, implementation and assessment of the Master Level Training Program
- Assumes primary responsibility for the recruitment of, on-going evaluations and professional development of CAPS Clinical Supervisors of Trainees
- Responsible for aligning MFT Training Manual policies with the CAPS Clinical Policy and Procedures
- Ensures that policies and practices are updated and aligned with current legal and ethical standards as defined by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences and monitor compliance of CAPS operations and of staff’s practices
- Provides leadership and oversight for Trainees recruitment and selection processes
- Directly supervise up to 2 staff who serve as clinical supervisors for Trainees
- Serves as primary contact for SCU Counseling Psychology’s Practicum Coordinator
- Establishes practicum site agreements with academic programs
- Coordinates and oversee Trainees’ schedules
- Encourages and support participation of directly supervised staff in appropriate professional development offerings
- Completes six-month introductory reviews and annual performance reviews for the staff, including collecting peer/colleague feedback
- Maintains membership in Professional Organizations as deemed appropriate
- Assist the Director in providing leadership to CAPS staff in ways that promote mutual respect, trust, and support of individual strengths
- Meet weekly with the Director and CAPS Management Team to establish and implement systemic decision-making processes that facilitate staff input and communication
- Assist the Director in monitoring the evolving mental health needs of students and in initiating the development of new services and programs
- Provides advice, consultation, and support in the development, implementation and evaluation of department wide policy and procedures
- Collaborates and coordinates with the Doctoral Training Director on a routine and ongoing manner
- Cultivates collaborative relationships with other members of CAPS’ management team, clinical staff team and support staff team
- Cultivates collaborative relationships with Student Health Center staff, Wellness Center staff and other university partners
- Displays a positive attitude within the Cowell Center and across departmental lines to contribute to staff morale and overall customer satisfaction
- Participates in departmental performance improvement activities
- Attends scheduled staff and management team meetings
- Serves on departmental or university committees as appropriate
- Performs other work-related assignments as assigned and /or required
- Ensures excellence in clinical training by collecting feedback from Trainees and Clinical Supervisors regarding clinical supervision and other training activities to make improvements and updates of program policies and practices
- Serves as a facilitator of conflict resolution among program’s team members and addresses complaints and concerns related to clinical supervisors’ and trainees’ work conduct
Training and Supervision (15%)
- Oversight of orientation onboarding process for MFT/PCC trainees
- Coordinates ongoing training for the Trainees
- Directly supervise up to 2 Trainees, including establishing and monitoring supervision goals and professional development plans
- Provides group supervision for Trainees
- Completes quarterly evaluations for all Trainees
- Reviews all clinical documentation of supervisees in a timely manner
- Develops and implements plans for remediation as needed
- Integrates diversity, inclusion and equity principles and practices in training and supervision of Trainees and Staff to promote mutual respect, trust, and support
- Ensures Trainees’ delivery of effective clinical services in compliance with professional standards of practice and ethical principles and provides regular, ongoing feedback
- Facilitate Practicum Training Team meetings with Clinical Supervisors to discuss Trainee Cohort’s progress, to provide consultation, support, and training for clinical supervisors
Clinical Services (30%)
- Meets with a caseload of approximately 10 students per week
- Exercises sound clinical judgment and discretion in services to clients
- Consults with colleagues regarding challenging clinical and case management issues.
- Works independently with clients in accordance to CAPS protocols and policies
- Provides services that are within the clinician’s scope of practice and scope of competency
- Provides 2-4 hours, in person coverage for crisis appointments (screening, assessment, and interventions)
- Provides triage phone consultation
- Develops customized treatment plans and utilizes interventions that are informed by client's developmental and psycho-social needs, by client's diversity and identities, and by excellent standard of care
- Provides health education related to promoting client self-care and the eight dimensions of wellness
- Upholds client’s rights in accordance with legal and ethical requirements
- Completes required digital clinical documentation and records in accordance with CAPS policy and practices
- Effectively function as a professional clinical member of a multidisciplinary treatment team
- Appropriately collaborates with members of clients’ support network (university partners, family members, peers, community service providers)
Consultation, Referral and Outreach Duties (5%)
- Collaborates and appropriately consults with Student Health Services to provide care to students who need medical care
- Utilizes effective communication techniques with students, faculty, staff, parents, family members and concerned others to promote quality client care
- Utilizes effective communication techniques with community providers
- Appropriately refers clients to on-campus and to off-campus community providers
- Shares in the regular rotation of on-call and after-hours phone consultation to University staff, including the on-duty Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)
- Provides psycho-educational outreach programming to the campus community
- Develops and directs outreach programs to the campus community
- Maintains appropriate documentation of consultations, referrals, and programmatic offerings

Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in clinical counseling from an accredited program such as clinical social work, marriage and family therapy, professional clinical counseling (Required)
- Minimum 5 years of clinical practice as a Licensed clinician (Required)
- Qualified as a clinical supervision per BBS regulations (Required)
- Experience in practicum training program management, or in clinical supervision of Trainees in California, and short-term psychotherapy (Required)
- Experience in practicum training program management, or in clinical supervision of Trainees in California, and short-term psychotherapy (Required)
- Minimum of 3 years of work experience as a clinician with university counseling center or related work setting (Preferred)
- Prior University counseling center experience and at least three years as a licensed therapist supervising staff in their clinical work (Preferred)
- Prior experience addressing the needs of a diverse student population (Preferred)
- Two years post-degree clinical experience with young adults (Preferred)
