Responsible for providing and coordinating orthopedic patient care which includes performing routine office procedures and testing, participating in patient teaching, completing triage which includes the delivery, management and coordination of telephone live calls and Voice Mail; Tasks; Fax etc. Communicating effectively with others and assisting the physician/mid-level provider in the delivery of patient care.
  • Works with MD/Mid-level providers to assist with various procedures.
  • Follow Provider Protocols and Standing Orders.
  • Document assessments, treatments and patient response to care.
  • Follow physician hall preferences; evaluates the patient’s need for radiology; ensures that patient is dressed appropriately for radiology exams.
  • Completes requisition forms for treatment prescribed by the physician, i.e. prescriptions, occupational therapy, physical therapy, out of work notes, lab requisitions, test and surgery orders etc.
  • Cleans and maintains instruments and equipment in proper working condition. Uses autoclave and other equipment properly, assuring sterile instruments and supplies.
  • Cleans and stocks rooms/module in accordance with clinical cleaning schedule. 
  • Maintains patient care environment cleanliness utilizing the module checklist.
  • Obtain test results; notify provider and document results as indicated.
  • Monitors the clinical schedule to have a clear understanding of the daily clinical assignments.
  • Reviews medical records and orders for completeness prior to putting patient in room so patient's and physician's time together is most beneficial.  If lab results, x-rays, consultation notes, test results, etc. are lacking, call appropriate persons to have these available.
  • Escorts patients to rooms in a professional and appropriate manner (wheelchair, stretcher, ambulatory).
  • Assists or performs treatments or tests under the physician's supervision as follows (not inclusive):
    • Suture / Staple removal.
    • Collection of specimens from wound, blood drawing or urine as required.
    • Applies appropriate dressings following aseptic and wound care techniques.
    • Properly applies DME, instructs patients in use and care; follows the process for billing for DME products.
    • Prepares for and assists with minor sterile procedures both inside and outside the minor procedure room.  Has knowledge and ability to set up sterile trays and sterile field.
    • Removes cast by using electric saw (requires full use of both hands).
    • Assists cast technician or applies casts at the direction of the physician/mid-level provider
    • Prepares and administers or assists the physician with injections /aspirations.
    • Takes temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure. 
    • Administer medications ordered by physician/mid-level providers
    • Document medication prescriptions, samples dispensed and refills in EHR.
  • Answers patient phone calls and explicitly follows physician’s orders or OC protocols for completion/documentation in patient electronic health record (EHR).
  • Assembles necessary equipment for exam/consultation, treatment or diagnostic test indicated by physician's orders or routine.
  • Participates in patient and family teaching based on providers diagnostic and treatment plan. Provides an environment in which questions are welcome.
  • Completes/reviews patient education booklets/instruction sheet with patient prior to minor procedures /casting/ surgery / testing / etc., according to provider instruction.
  • Attends clinical staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Enhances professional growth by keeping certification up to date through continuing education programs.
  • Participates in committees upon request.
  • Coordinates surgical care with surgery scheduling staff on an emergency basis assisting with notification, autologous blood donations, and anesthesia work-ups and medical clearance for patients scheduled for emergency surgery.
  • Verifies that encounter form is complete for procedure & diagnosis. 
  • Obtains prior authorizations as required by practice manager.
  • Assist patients with scheduling of outside tests/procedures/surgeries as required.
  • Assists in scheduling emergency admissions. 
  • Assists physician with any studies being conducted.
  • Performs other functions, responsibilities and duties as may be required from time to time under the direction of the Physician, mid-level provider, Practice Manager or team leader.

Education required:

  • Graduate of an accredited program for medical office assistants or college degree in biological sciences.

Experience required:

  • Prefer one year in medical office.
  • Orthopedic experience preferred.

Professional license or certification requirements:

  • Certification from American Association of Medical Assistants or Registered through American Medical Technologies
  • Registered or Licensed Nurse
  • Athletic Trainer
  • CPR certification or ability to obtain.
  • Valid driver’s license to travel to meetings and other offices.
