About the Department

The Department of Biology at St. Bonaventure University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning in Fall 2026.

We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar who is intrinsically motivated to teach undergraduate students in both classroom and laboratory settings and who will maintain an active, mentored research program involving undergraduate students. This position offers the opportunity to join a collaborative, student-focused department that supports programs serving life science majors, health science majors, and non-science students.

While the position primarily supports the Anatomy and Physiology curriculum, we welcome candidates with disciplinary backgrounds in physiology, neurobiology, integrative biology, or other related areas of the life sciences.

Position Duties

Teaching Responsibilities

This position carries a normal teaching load of four courses per semester. Primary teaching responsibilities include Anatomy and Physiology for life science and health science majors, as well as Fundamentals of Biology for non-science majors. Additional courses may be assigned based on the candidate’s expertise and departmental needs.

Research Expectations

Faculty are also expected to develop and maintain an active research program in the biological sciences that engages undergraduate students. Start-up funds, research space, and ongoing institutional support will be provided. Additionally, the endowed Borer Fellowship Program offers additional summer financial support for student researchers.

Service and Advising

Faculty members contribute to the department, university, and broader community through committee work, program development and academic advising. Advising responsibilities include helping Biology majors with course planning, professional preparation, and career guidance.

Institutional Service:

  • Participation in activities (usually through committee work) designed to advance the mission and quality of the University, School, and Departmental programs. Assignments to routine committee work will be made in consideration of other demands placed on the faculty member by the University.
  • Attendance at Department, School, and general Faculty and University meetings including commencements, convocations, and other official University exercises.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Additional duties as assigned by the Provost and/or the Dean.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Physiology, Anatomy, Neurobiology or other Biology-related discipline by August 2026 (required)
  • Post-doctoral experience (preferred)
  • Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching excellence
  • Prior experience mentoring undergraduate research projects (preferred)

Possesses the appropriate professional degree or license or, in rare circumstances, have made exceptional contributions to his or her field of learning so as to render the achievement of such a degree or license unnecessary.  Demonstrated teaching ability, scholarly promise, interest in the professional and personal growth of students, and a genuine spirit of study necessary to maintain currency in one's academic field.
