About the Department

The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled/professional work to implement a program of aquatics activities at Big Corkscrew Island Regional Park. Employees in this classification plan and organize recreational activities; supervise activities and participants; recruit and register participants; assure safety of activities; teach rules and skill of the activities; and oversee work of subordinates and volunteers.

Position Duties

  • Organizes and sets up programs and activities; supervises recreation activities; resolves differences that may arise during play.
  • Enforces safety rules and guidelines; may serve in a lifeguard capacity at pools.
  • Greets the public at the front desk; answers the telephone; gives information over the phone and in person; receives and documents fees; balances cash drawer.
  • Participates in short- and long-range planning; obtains permission and permits where applicable.
  • Supervises all aspects of special events; makes provisions for parking and security; assists with clean-up after event.
  • Assists with contracts, special events, and other information needed to run programs.
  • Issues equipment; ensures cleanliness and operability of equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains logs and reports of daily activities; prepares forms for registration; registers participants; prepares attendance sheets; files program information.
  • Opens and closes the recreation building; checks buildings; reports any maintenance problems; maintains order in the building; checks keys in and out.
  • Makes copies; folds and stuffs envelopes; types labels, letters, and charts; copies and collates handbooks; keeps files in order; writes work orders; maintains computerized databases; prepares bulletin board and flyers; prepares supply order for office.
  • Sets up room for activity; cleans and prepares rooms for programs; prepares office and facility for next day's use; loads and unloads tables and chairs; removes trash after activities.
  • Attends meetings.
  • Schedules and rents out gym and picnic shelters for activities; accounts for and ensures safety of money received; makes schedules for leagues and organizations.
  • Schedules and prepares purchase orders for transportation needs.
  • Posts and fills summer camp positions; screens applicants and performs background checks; checks references; administers drug tests; processes and distributes applications; prepares hew hire paperwork.
  • Maintains and posts payroll for temporary employees.
  • Purchases and inventories supplies and equipment for programs; prepares purchase orders; cleans and organizes supply closets; orders and issues divisional clothing.
  • Verifies receipts
  • Supervises and schedules coaching staff.
  • Operates a personal computer, copier, facsimile machine, telephone, score board panels, credit card machine, TV/VCR, adding machine, air pump, laminating machine, motor vehicle, cash register, exercise equipment, public address system, popcorn machine, wet vacuum, stop watch, hydraulic chair lift, pool pump, pool vacuum, pressure washer, rock wall, soda dispenser, golf cart, van, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
  • Voluntary Pre-kindergarten pre-school program (if applicable)
  • Plans and provides for the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development of the children in a developmentally appropriate environment, using an approved curriculum; Plans and implements the approved curriculum; Observes, records, and documents children's progress; Maintains all files per the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) and Early Learning Coalition standards; Acts as a positive role model for children; Provides for the health, safety, and welfare of the children by maintaining a clean environment, taking appropriate action when accidents or illnesses occur, and encourages and teaches hygiene, good eating habits, and manners; Works cooperatively as a team, and communicates openly and effectively with co-workers and supervisor; Encourages family involvement in the program, communicates daily with parents in a professional and courteous manner, and takes part in parent conferences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; 
  • One year of experience in the parks and recreation field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. 
  • Fingerprinting required.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
  • Must possess certifications in Red Cross Lifeguarding and be CPR/AED/First Aid certified. 
  • Water Safety Instructor certification preferred. 
  • Must possess and maintain certifications in CPR and First Aid. 
  • May require the possession and maintenance of a valid Florida driver’s license with any applicable endorsements and maintain eligibility requirements and endorsement(s) to drive a County vehicle as provided in CMA 5805.

  • Salary offers above the minimum pay grade may be considered based on qualifications. 
  • Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency.  The County’s Administrative Office will determine who will be required to work on an incident-by-incident basis.
