Nursing Faculty: Instructor or Assistant Professor (Nontenure Track; Tenure Track if Eligible)

Position Summary


Full time faculty position in the BSN pre-licensure nursing program, accredited by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing (OBN) and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The position requires classroom, lab, and clinical instruction, or a combination thereof, student advisement, curriculum development, program evaluation, professional scholarship and service activities, and active inter and intra-departmental and university-wide committee participation. This is a 10-month position with a minimum teaching load of 24 credit hours each academic year. Some travel may be required.

Essential Job Duties


• Prepare and deliver classroom, clinical, laboratory and simulation experiences that are organized, innovative and creative, demonstrating expertise in facilitation


• Teach critical thinking and problem solving, using reflection, probing, active listening and other evidence-based teaching strategies


• Promotes student mastery of cultural, ethnic, and socially diverse competencies by providing learning experiences from regional, national or global perspectives


• Assess student achievement of learning objectives via quality test construction, evaluation of test items, evaluation of papers and other assignments; and development of rubrics; Hold students accountable for their learning


• Advise nursing students in the process of nursing program eligibility and completion of graduation requirements


• Actively participate in and support School and university-wide participatory governance components and activities and other collaborative processes


• Respond to email and telephone communications within 24 hours during regular business work week


• Recommend evidence-based curricular changes or revisions to the Curriculum Committee


• Participate in ongoing systematic course and program evaluation.


• Maintain expertise and certifications in area of responsibility; Demonstrate experience and familiarity with nursing clinical duties and skills of clinical site


• Obtain competencies in programs used by the School of Nursing (i.e., testing, simulation), and the university


• Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and independent judgement

• Serve as a professional role model for students in dress, communication, deportment, problem solving, care delivery and patient advocacy to facilitate student’s socialization into the profession

• Demonstrate respect for the student as a new learner by communicating constructive feedback in appropriate ways


• Demonstrate the use of technology to engage students in learning using a student-centered approach


• Support student learning by identifying individual learning needs and teaching students to employ active learning strategies


• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills, to work with faculty, instructors, staff, and students in the classroom, clinical, lab, simulation, and other interactions 


• Creativity and flexibility in designing innovative approaches to solving problems and improving processes


• Maintain confidentiality in all areas 


Qualifications

 
• Doctoral degree in (or with a major in) nursing from an accredited school


• Will consider a candidate holding a Bachelor of Science in nursing who is actively pursuing and making consistent progress towards a master’s degree in nursing from an accredited school. 


Preference will be given to those candidates already holding a Master of Science degree in (or with a major in) nursing from an accredited school. Tenure track requires degree in hand 


• Current or eligibility for an unencumbered RN license in Oklahoma, or an approved multistate license


• Appropriate level of knowledge and clinical expertise required to successfully teach in assigned courses


• Two years’ experience in a clinical setting (required by OBN), along with any other requirements for faculty promulgated by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing, including all physical requirements as outlined in the “Scope of Practice for Registered Nurses” (OBN Rules and Regulations) 


• Maintain all requirements for faculty from clinical agencies and accreditors

• Frequent bending, moving, lifting and carrying material weighing up to 150 lbs. with mechanical or human assistance
• Working in all weather conditions 
• Exposure to high noise levels

• Regularly performs tasks that involve repetitive wrist and finger movement
• Regularly operates a computer and other standard office equipment
• Regularly required to talk and hear in an office, classroom, lab, and clinical setting

The work is performed in a variety of settings, to include but not limited to: 


• Typical office setting with moderate noise levels from conversations, and standardoffice equipment
• Classroom setting with moderate levels of noise from conversation and classroom technology
• Lab or Simulation room settings with moderate levels of noise from conversation and lab orsimulation equipment
• Various clinical settings with low to moderate levels of noise from conversation and equipment
