Weekend RN’s Responsibilities: (Included, but not limited to)

  • Responsible for providing nursing care, interventions, education, and support to patients and families during weekends and holidays on call.
  • Assumes primary responsibility for all patients during assigned shift, including assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care needs.
  • Obtains patient and family information in order to provide care in accordance with the standards and practices of Northern Illinois Hospice.
  • Responds to medical or emotional crisis and/or death of a patient. Makes home visits to provide direct care as needed.
  • Assesses patient’s condition, documents appropriately and updates Care Plans as needed.
  • Responds to incoming calls and return calls as outlined in Northern Illinois Hospice’s On Call Policy and Procedure.
  • Provides follow up phone calls as needed after triage calls to ensure patients’ and families’ understanding of provided instructions and effectiveness of intervention.

Requirements of the Weekend RN:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, minimum associate degree in nursing, Bachelor of Science Degree (BSN) in nursing preferred.
  • Professional Registered Nurse license issued by the Illinois Board of Nursing.
  • Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) preferred (or obtained within 2 years of employment).
  • CPR Certification obtained within three months of hire.
  • One year of medical/surgical, oncology, or hospice nursing experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a registered nurse preferred.
  • Active patient contact within past three years preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, make accurate, and at times, quick judgments.
  • Ability to supervise others appropriately. Ability to respond appropriately to crisis in the community or facility setting.
  • Acceptance of and adaptability to different social, racial, cultural, and religious modes.
  • Local residence with ability to respond to on-call within 30 minutes. Meets agency requirements for criminal background check.

Salary Description

We support our employees’ wellbeing and regularly benchmark with other companies in our industry to offer an extensive Total Reward package for this position. The starting wage for this role is $38.00 per hour. However, final wage pay will be carefully determined based on several factors, including education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Additionally, this role may be eligible for other forms of compensation and benefits.


Expected Hours of Work for Weekend RN: Every weekend, 8:00am - 8:30pm Saturday and Sunday
