The Sterile Processing Manager will have 24-hour responsibility for the quality of care and performance improvement activities in Sterile Processing. Organizes services in Sterile Processing, in collaboration with the Director, and in congruence with the Kaweah Health and department plan, based on available staff and needs of the departments served.

QUALIFICATIONS

License /Certification
Required: Certified Registered Central Services Technician (CRCST) from HSPA or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) from CBSPD.


Experience
Required: Background as a Sterile Processing Technician, Surgical Scrub Technician, LVN, or RN, with two years of Sterile Processing and/or Operating Room supervisory/management experience.



JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential

Demonstrates a knowledge and understanding of:

Joint Commission standards.

Applicable Federal and State guidelines and regulations including HIPPA.

Policies and procedures for Sterile Processing.

National standards for Sterile Processing.

Has 24-hour responsibility for the quality of care and performance improvement activities in Sterile Processing:

Organizes service in Sterile Processing, in collaboration with the Director and in congruence with the Kaweah Health and department plan, based on available staff and needs of the departments served.

Demonstrates and utilizes expert knowledge and skills in the area(s) of practice. Assists staff with clinical assessment and decision-making.

Adjusts personnel based on census and other fluctuations which affect productivity measurements in the department. Responds to unexpected staff shortages by maximizing available resources and assisting staff in the prioritization of patient care needs.

Demonstrates awareness of the needs and preferences of the medical care providers and provides excellent service.

Monitors documentation to ensure the adequacy of information and compliance with regulatory standards.

Knows and utilizes the Medical Staff and Kaweah Health chains-of-command.

Evaluates staff annually. Completes the performance appraisals within 30 days of the due date.

Identifies performance or education issues through observation, monitoring outcomes and processes, and promptly communicates concerns to the staff member/s.

Uses research findings in the development of policies, procedures, and practice guidelines for patient/resident care. Shares research information with others.

Utilizes HR policies and procedures to ensure Kaweah Health employment standards are met.

Determines decisions and actions on behalf of patients and staff in an ethical manner.

Maintains patient confidentiality within legal and regulatory parameters.

Acts as a patient advocate and coaches/mentors staff in advocating for patients.

Role models the delivery of services in a nonjudgmental and nondiscriminatory manner that preserves autonomy, dignity, and rights of patients and staff.

Provides adequate staff resources for carrying out the department plan:

Responsible for preparing staff schedules that meet the needs of the patient population and average daily activity.

Utilizes manpower, space, equipment, dollars and time in a manner which effectively meets department and hospital objectives.

Interviews and hires new employees. Assesses and documents the competency of each staff member hired.

Accountable for attraction, retention and appreciation of staff.

Contributes to staff development by assuring continuing education and in-services are available to staff.

Responsible for working with the shift leaders to improve the functions of Sterile Processing. Demonstrates consistent follow-up and accountability.

Demonstrates ability to provide leadership and development for Coordinator, shift leaders, and staff.

Communicates effectively with key constituencies:

Seeks and listens to feedback from key stakeholders: patients, physicians, staff, and other departments/units.

Communicates effectively with other patient care leaders. Communicates and cooperates with Nurse Managers, to ensure patient care and staffing resources are coordinated
Actively participates in assigned meetings and projects.

Responds promptly to communication from others.

Coordinates service between departments and disciplines.

Daily Workflow:

Directs the workflow of the department, assignments, add-on cases, and handling emergency situations that arise.

Reviews and revises staffing levels, shift coverage, etc. to meet activity demands and changes. Prepares position control reports, as necessary for staff replacement and changes.

Enforces all regulatory compliance policies and procedures relating to Sterile Processing and Supply Management.

Performs discussion coaching, discipline issues related to staff performance.

Communicates with Director consistently on any and all problems concerning the department.

Sterile Processing:

Supervises and assists in proper operations and functions of Sterile Processing. This includes quality control procedures.

Supervises and checks quality control procedures. Assists manager with monthly and quarterly report of same.

Revises instrument count sheets on an ongoing basis.

Keeps up with regulatory and current trends in Sterile Processing policies and procedures.

Collaborates with vendors/suppliers to acquire/handle/return requested supplies, equipment and instrumentation.

Coordinates the tracking and replacement of owned and consigned instrumentation.

Coordinates the addition of instrumentation sets, appropriate documentation, communication and education to appropriate personnel (both in and outside of Sterile Processing).

Responsible for appropriate notification and documentation of malfunctioning of assigned instrument/supply items.

Responsible to coordinate all preventative maintenance and repairs for assign equipment. Demonstrates knowledge, competency and maintenance of computer systems, programs, and functions as it relates to Sterile Processing.

Provides assistance to coordinate Sterile Processing activities as it relates to all other departments.

Supply Management:

Establishes appropriate par levels and maintains adequate quantities of supplies and equipment.

Reviews and revises to par/inventory sheets on an ongoing basis.

Evaluates and determines organization of supplies. Regroups and re-labels supply shelves as needed to accommodate additions, deletions, and changes.

Notifies appropriate manager of any supply outages, low inventory, back-orders, substitutions, or any other critical supply issues.

Strives to achieve optimum supply levels, low inventory carrying costs, minimum wastage, etc for excellent supply management.

Cleanliness:

Monitors sterile/clean supply areas for cleanliness. Checks supply holding/storage areas for cleanliness.

Monitors equipment/area for preventative maintenance, routine repairs. Arranges repairs, as necessary.

Communicates any equipment issues to appropriate personnel.

Education:

Collaborates with the Supervisor/ Educator on the orientation plan for new staff.

Assists Educator in the training of Sterile Processing personnel and in-service education where and when it is needed. Keeps current on new equipment/instruments and train staff.

Reports:

Prepares annual Capital Equipment budgets and submits same to Director. Coordinates this activity with Nurse Managers within Surgical Services.

Prepares and maintains annual Operations budget. Monitors expenses monthly. Prepares variance reports as requested by Director.

Prepares and maintains annual equipment service contracts on Sterile Processing equipment. Reports major repairs to Director.

Monitors staff productivity through daily, pay-period and monthly reporting. Prepares variance reports as requested by Director.

Prepares quarterly reports to Infection prevention, as specified by that committee.

Prepares reports and maintains records (sterilization records, time studies, productivity reports, instrument accountability reports, revision of preference cards, etc.).

Responsible for reporting any errors made in the department.

Pay Range

$38.92 -$58.38
