Job Summary
We are looking for a Veterinary Technician II to join our Insourcing Solutions Team in Baltimore, MD.
As the Veterinary Technician II, you will provide advanced technical support for laboratory animal care and veterinary services in a government-funded biotech research facility. You will perform skilled animal health monitoring, technical procedures, and research support under the guidance of veterinarians and in compliance with animal welfare regulations.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Reviews, comprehends and follows all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific areas. Cares for and maintains laboratory animals in accordance with Animal Welfare Act, the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, NIH policies and guidelines and other applicable regulations and policies
- Performs daily health assessments of laboratory animals in the colony and animal treatments as instructed by Clinical Veterinarian(s)
- Performs technical procedures required by research protocols, such as daily clinical observations and health examinations of sick animals, prior to reporting adverse findings to the Clinical Veterinarian
- Coordinate and schedule in-house animal sampling (blood, fecal and fur swabs) as a part of the animal health surveillance program
- Provides technical support, e.g. animal handling and restraint, weaning, tail snips, ear tagging, blood and other tissues sample collection, injections, treatments, surgical preparation, pre-, peri-, and post-operative observations, euthanasia and assisting with research procedures
- Provides training for animal care and investigative staff as directed
- Provides quality assurance for various aspects of the project, including animal health surveillance, clinical cases, autoclave monitoring (Hy-Check), monitoring of incoming animal shipments for container integrity and animal health
- Monitors environmental parameters and maintains written records, including room temperature and humidity, light cycles, and sanitation
Job Qualifications
- HS diploma or GED equivalency required with 4 years of related technical experience (specifically rodents). Ideal candidate can also possess a AS in Vet Technology/or a science related degree with 3 years’ experience, BS science related degree with 2 years’ experience or a US Army Animal Care Specialist (68T) program graduate
- LAT certification preferred – must obtain it within one year of hire
- Advanced knowledge of rodent technical skills and capability of identifying sick animals and providing medical treatment as prescribed
The schedule for this position is Thursday through Monday 7AM-3:30PM. The hourly rate for this position is $28.50/hour.
