Summary Description of Position
Primary responsibilities involve assisting and advising operations personnel at multiple field locations on safety training, hazard recognition, risk assessment, industrial health programs, and Federal, State, and local regulations. Also assists the Division Manager of Safety and Health in developing and implementing safety, health, and risk management processes.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Under general direction is responsible for the health and safety functions within an area representing 54 facilities (including Aggregate – Limestone / Sand & Gravel, Ready Mix, Asphalt, railyards and terminals) with 694 hourly employees. This position will have 3 direct reports and will be responsible for the development and growth of these employees which includes smart goal setting, one-on-one huddles and developing strategic and tactical goals for the area. Assist in creating a world class safety culture through continuous improvement within their area of responsibility. Implements policies and procedures to assure awareness of and compliance with H & S requirements of the organization. Responsible for monitoring and preventing physical and health hazards present throughout the facilities work sites. Provides technical leadership and functional guidance to operating unit personnel to ensure health standards promulgated by regulatory authorities are being enforced. Coordinates audits of health and safety programs at the facility to identify and control significant loss producing exposure. Keeps informed on all existing and proposed changes in occupational health and safety regulations. Assists in the development and conducts basic H&S training to facility employees. Promotes communication programs to enhance and encourage employee awareness of serious injury and fatality prevention and industrial hygiene.
Education, Experience, Skills Required
Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field is strongly preferred.
The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of methods of prevention of accidents, occupational injuries, illness and property loss. Requirements include 8-10 years relevant experience, preferably in the mining/aggregates/Ready Mix industry, knowledge of MSHA and/or OSHA safety and health regulations. Must be motivated and team oriented. This position will involve travel throughout Texas & Oklahoma. A vehicle reimbursement program is provided.
Other Qualifications include the following:
- Experience. Previous experience in an industrial environment or mining/aggregates industry in either surface or underground operations is preferred. CSP or CMSP highly desired. Demonstrated experience in effective implementation of Loss Control Systems.
- Operational Knowledge. Knowledge of mining, asphalt, ready mix concrete and/or landfill operations is preferred. Must have knowledge in methods of preventions of incidents, occupational injuries, illnesses, and property loss. Must demonstrate knowledge of Loss Control principles.
- Regulation Knowledge. Must have a working knowledge of MSHA, OSHA general industry and construction, ATF, and DOT regulations.
- Problem-Solving Skills. Must possess excellent hazard recognition skills, working with different partners to address the challenges and problems ensuring accurate, safe, and efficient solutions. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Possess the ability to interface effectively with all levels of personnel.
- Technology Skills. Must have strong computer skills, including Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, and cell phones. Must be able to use various and highly sophisticated computerized devices. Must be able to drive a motorized vehicle.
