Required
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
- Two (2) years of experience as a school bus driver, some of which shall have been in a supervisory role.
- Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
- Must have, or be able to obtain, certification in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of an automated external defibrillator [22.1-178].
- Must possess a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles that shows, within the preceding five years, there has been no convictions of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, convictions of refusing to take a blood or breath test, convictions of a felony, or assignment to any alcohol safety action program or driver alcohol rehabilitation program pursuant to 18.2-271.1 of the Code of Virginia or, within the preceding 12 months, there have been no convictions of two or more moving traffic violations or has not been required to attend a driver improvement clinic by the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles pursuant to 46.2-498 of the Code of Virginia.
- Must have possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class B commercial motor vehicle, as defined by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and is required to possess a commercial driver's license CDL-B with P and S (passenger and school bus) endorsements with air brakes.
- Minimum age requirement of 21 years.
- Successful completion of the FCPS bus driver training program.
- Must have a satisfactory pre-employment physical examination and a completed School Bus Driver's Physician Certificate (form EB.001) as prescribed by the Virginia Board of Education and pass physical examination annually thereafter [22.1-178]; must submit to random testing for alcohol and controlled substances [49 CFR Parts 40 and 382].
- Must complete the Virginia Board of Education training program on autism spectrum disorders [8VAC20-70-350].
- Must provide a pre-employment school bus driver moral character statement (form EB.003) as prescribed by the Virginia Board of Education [22.1-178].
- Must have completed or shall complete within the first 90 days of employment to the position, the Department of Transportation mandated Drug and Alcohol Suspicion Training for Supervisors [49 CRF 382.603].
- Must have completed or shall complete within one (1) year of employment to the position, the "New Director/Supervisor" class conducted by the Virginia Department of Education [8VAC20-70-350].
- Knowledge of safe, proper, and courteous motor vehicle operating procedures.
- Ability to learn state regulations and laws pertaining to the operation of school buses.
- Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse on the two-way radio with passengers, public officials, and the general public.
- Ability to read a standard road map and have knowledge of the local street and road system of Fairfax County. May require interstate travel.
- Ability to interact positively with, gain the respect of, and maintain discipline over student passengers to ensure that behavior is controlled and not distractive to safe driving.
- Ability to assist special-needs student riders.
- Ability to work with attendants in managing all riders.
- Ability to read, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions.

Major Duties/Essential Functions
- Assists in developing and updating school bus routes for an assigned sector.
- Compiles data on a number of students, their home sites, school(s) attended, school bell schedules, street layouts, traffic patterns, assigned drivers' current run schedules, and other relevant factors.
- Assesses the impact of factors such as patterns of field trips and new program needs.
- Consults with school administrators to resolve scheduling issues.
- Designs school bus routes and schedules to ensure adequate services are maintained within the assigned sector.
- Works cooperatively with other transportation supervisors and staff to design routes covering two or more sectors.
- Assists in the assignment of buses and bus route schedules and ensures all routes are covered.
- Adjusts driver assignments, runs, and timing of routes.
- Requests substitutes, as required.
- Supervises early/late bus services during inclement weather and other emergencies.
- Evaluates performance of bus driver supervisors and works with bus driver supervisors to complete bus driver and bus attendant performance evaluations.
- Counsels employees, as required.
- Plans, schedules, and assigns drivers to field trips and reviews and verifies field trip vouchers.
- Maintains bus maintenance database and ensures adherence to the maintenance schedule.
- Participates in transportation program planning activities.
- Provides input and recommendations to optimize program effectiveness.
- Attends IEP/504 meetings to provide input for special transportation services.
- Works cooperatively with other school personnel to ensure individual transportation accommodations are provided as necessary.
- May drive a school bus on a regular or reduced route, as necessitated by operational requirements.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
