Are you someone who loves working under the hood and takes pride in keeping vehicles running smoothly? The City of Wilmington is looking for a skilled and motivated Light Equipment and Auto Mechanic to join our team!
In this role, you’ll perform preventive maintenance and repairs on a variety of City vehicles — from Police vehicles and SUVs to light-duty trucks that help keep our organization moving every day.
You’ll have the opportunity to use your mechanical know-how, work with a supportive team, and make a real difference in keeping essential city operations running safely and efficiently!
Position Duties
What You’ll Do
Perform preventive maintenance including oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and tire services.
Diagnose and repair brakes, engines, transmissions, drivelines, steering, suspension, and electrical systems.
Conduct safety inspections of emergency and safety equipment, and ensure all vehicles meet operational standards.
Complete roadside service calls for City vehicles as needed.
Assist with shop organization and upkeep, including cleaning and maintaining tools and work areas.
Pick up parts from vendors and assist with vehicle preparation for surplus.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Six-months to one year of advanced study or training beyond high school or GED education
Experience:
Three (3) years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education or experience.
- Current Auto Service Excellence (ASE) Certification, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
- NC State Inspection License, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- NC State Emission License, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Forklift License, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
- Must be able to read, understand, and follow technical manuals
- Must be knowledgeable in maintenance of commercial vehicles. Training and experience with Ford and Dodge preferred
**If a candidate does not possess the required certification or license at the time of hire but obtains it at their own expense within the specified timeframe, they will be eligible for reimbursement of the certification or license cost after providing proof of successful completion.**
Other Qualifications
Physical Demands: Exerting up to 50-100 lbs. occasionally; 10-25 lbs frequently; or up to 10-20 ibs constantly.
Working Conditions: This position will primarily work in a shop setting.
