Are you looking for a unique opportunity to develop and apply GIS solutions in support of local government operations?
Do you have experience creating and maintaining geospatial data, maps, and apps using enterprise GIS technology?
The City of Napa is currently seeking a GIS-focused Engineering Assistant to join the Public Works Department. In this role, you will have the chance to work with the City’s GIS coordinator on behalf of Public Works to integrate GIS into the City’s planning, decision-making, and operational workflows to support our community.
The successful candidate will bring a knowledge of both city engineering practices and GIS to evaluate, initiate, develop and maintain effective GIS tools and projects based on the needs of various divisions within Public Works. Key tasks will also include managing authoritative spatial datasets, quality checking for data integrity, integration with asset management programs, training staff in GIS tasks, and creating front-end apps and interfaces for both internal and public use.
Ideal candidates for the Engineering Assistant - GIS role will have shown success in demonstrating the following competencies:
- Technical Knowledge and Skill - Demonstrates a solid understanding of GIS principles and the effective use of Esri tools and applications to support engineering tasks. Applies spatial analysis and geoprocessing techniques with a strong focus on data accuracy, consistency, and staying current with GIS trends and technologies.
- Technology Savvy - Using one's practical knowledge and understanding of recent technology tools, solutions, and trends to improve work results, solve work problems, and take advantage of new business opportunities.
- Decision Making- Identifies and understands issues, problems, and opportunities; compares information from different sources to draw conclusions and develop appropriate solutions.
- Managing Work - Effectively handling one's time and resources to ensure that work is completed efficiently.

Candidates who have participated in a testing process for a recruitment are not eligible to re-take the same test within six (6) months.

- Based on the City Charter, the final phase of the selection process is the Probationary Period, which in most cases is six (6) months but may be twelve (12) months depending on the classification.
- When three or fewer candidates are available, the testing procedures outlined in the Job Announcement may be waived by the Human Resources Department.
