About the Department
The City of St. Charles, IL, seeks enthusiastic individuals with a high degree of personal accountability and integrity to participate in a competitive evaluation process to establish an eligibility list for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. Starting pay effective May 1, 2025, is $84,130 (top pay is $120,186) with a competitive benefit package to include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, pension, deferred compensation, retiree healthcare funding plan, tuition reimbursement, employee assistance program, a comprehensive wellness program, and much more. Minimum Qualifications
Eligibility requirements for participation in the examination process consist of the following:
- United States citizen
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Valid Illinois driver’s license
- Certification as a Firefighter II/Basic from the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal as of December 5, 2025
- Licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P) by the State of Illinois (or National Certification acceptable by Illinois Department of Public Health) at time of hire. If not certified as EMT-P, must provide proof of current enrollment in an Illinois Department of Public Health approved Paramedic certification program at time of application to participate in the testing process.
- 21 years of age at the time of application and under 35 years of age at the time of written examination (or as otherwise exempt from age limitation by statute)
- Successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) by December 5, 2025 - certification shall not be more than 1 year old as of that date

Other Qualifications
Copies of the following documents must be uploaded into the online application for it to be considered complete and considered for examination.
- Birth certificate
- High School diploma or GED *College diploma not acceptable substitute but also include if intend to apply education points for the final eligibility register
- Driver’s license
- State of Illinois Firefighter II/Basic Operations Firefighter certification
- Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) current Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P) license or documentation of participation in an IDPH approved Paramedic Program at the time of application
- Military discharge (DD214/Copy4) if applicable and intend to apply military points for the final eligibility register
- CPAT card (or can be brought to the written exam on December 5thor 6th, 2025
Ability to furnish upon request, a copy of the following, to the extent applicable: a resume; transcripts of higher learning; other professional licenses; training certificates; documents confirming work experience; employee evaluations; and any other employment related material as requested or required.
The following is a tentative schedule for the examination process:
- October 15, 2025 - Application period begins
- November 19, 2025 - Deadline for submission of application/documentation
- December 5th or 6th, 2025 - Orientation and written examination (6:30 pm Friday or 8:00 am Saturday)
- Indicate date preference at time of application and we will do our best to accommodate
- December 2025 - Oral interviews
- Early January 2026 - Posting of Initial Eligibility Register
- Late January 2026 - Posting of Final Eligibility Register
Dates are subject to change at the discretion of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. Applicants are required to be present for all components of the testing process. The scores of the written test and the oral examination are computed, and an Initial Eligibility Register is developed. Following the application of preference points, a Final Eligibility Register will be completed by January 2026. Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation is required. Post offer, successful completion of a psychological assessment, physical, functional capacity evaluation, and drug screen are required.
