Job Summary:

Harris-Stowe State University is seeking a dedicated and student-focused Adjunct Instructor to teach a Seminar in Higher Education course designed for first-year students. This course plays a pivotal role in supporting students’ successful transition into college life by fostering academic preparedness, personal development, and engagement with campus resources. 

The instructor will guide student through essential topics such as navigating the University Bulletin, understanding campus resources, developing effective time management and student strategies, prioritizing responsibilities, and acclimating to the social and academic expectations of college. 


Essential Functions:

  • Teach 1-2 sections of the Seminar in Higher Education course, typically 1 credit hour each.
  • Develop and deliver engaging, student-centered instruction aligned with the course objectives.
  • Facilitate discussions and activities that promote student reflection, personal growth, and academic success.
  • Introduce student to the university Bulletin and guide them in understanding academic policies, degree requirements, and course planning.
  • Familiarize students with available campus resources (e.g., academic advising, tutoring, counseling, student organizations).
  • Teach time management, study skills, and critical thinking strategies that support college-level learning.
  • Encourage students to reflect on and balance academic, social, and personal priorities.
  • Monitor student attendance, participation, and progress; provide timely and constructive feedback.
  • Maintain accurate records, submit grades, and adhere to institutional policies and deadlines.
  • Attend training sessions or faculty meetings as required.

Knowledge:

  • Effective use of Learning Management System (LMS) Examples: Canvas, Blackboard, etc.
  • Ability to use email, ZOOM, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, etc.
  • PowerPoint, Google Slides, or other presentation software
  • Word processing (Microsoft Word, Google Docs)

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Education, Counseling or related field.
  • Experience teaching or working with first-year college students (preferred but not required).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster an inclusive and supportive classroom environment. Familiarity with student development theory and best practices in first-year student success.
