Description
Under general supervision of Plaza Youth Services Manager promotes youth services and programs, provides readers advisory and reference services to customers in person and by telephone; participates in children’s and young adult collection maintenance.
Basic Information
- Reports to the Plaza Youth Services Manager.
- 24 hours per week.
- $20.05 per hour.
- Position open until filled.
Schedule
Monday: 5 pm - 9 pm
Tuesday: 3 pm - 9 pm
Saturday: 9 am - 6 pm
Sunday: 11 am - 6 pm

Plaza Branch: 4801 Main St, KCMO, 64112.
Job Duties (Essential Functions)
- Provides information, readers advisory, community referral and reference services for youth services customers to facilitate effective use of library resources: provides guidance in the use of library resources; recommends and retrieves materials in support of customer requests; promotes and accepts requests for materials in circulation or located elsewhere in system; provides reference support services activities.
- Maintains effective, courteous working relationships with all library customers.
- Promotes youth programming, including maintaining social media accounts and adding content to Library Facebook, etc., to meet the needs of youth services customers and adults working with youth.
- Assists with maintaining collection in the youth services area: contributes to assessing needs of community served; creates displays, teacher collections, Bibliocommons lists.
- Maintains effective, courteous working relationships with library staff in the branches and in all departments at Plaza in person and through telephone and email contact.
- Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assigned.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with public and staff, particularly with children and teens.
- Demonstrated ability to organize work effectively and plan programs.
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of professional and paraprofessional library work, including the information interview.
- Demonstrated knowledge of children’s and young adult literature and youth services.
- Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Skilled in operating electronic equipment or demonstrated ability to learn.
- Intermediate computer skills.
- Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to speak and understand English is required, additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages used in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.
Required Education and Experience
- Must have at least one year of experience and desire to work with children and teens.
- Must have two to five years of customer service experience.
- Must have at least one year of work experience at a library.
Work Environment
Work is performed at the Plaza Branch. Workspace is shared with co-workers and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
