Job Description

What is the opportunity?

As an Economist, you will:

  • Produce regular written economic analysis, including insights into the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) policy outlook and implications for financial markets.
  • Contribute to RBC’s global publications by providing regional perspectives and high-quality research.
  • Build, maintain and enhance economic models and databases to support forecasting and analysis.
  • Present or contribute to internal and external meetings, client discussions, podcasts and media engagements.
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with key policymakers and institutions, including the RBA, Commonwealth, State debt authorities and others.
  • Leverage RBC’s AI capabilities to enhance economic research and analysis.
  • Stay informed about RBC’s global research and promote its relevance to the Australian economy and markets.
  • Build expertise in fixed income and rates markets under the guidance of senior team members.

What will you do?

  • Research & Analysis: Deliver insights on macroeconomic trends, central bank policies and market implications.
  • Client Engagement: Represent RBC in client meetings, industry forums and media appearances.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams, including sales and trading, to align research with business needs.
  • Model Development: Maintain and improve economic models and databases for forecasting.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Build strong connections with policymakers, industry bodies and clients to enhance RBC’s presence and influence.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics is essential.
  • Formal training in Economics from institutions such as the RBA, Treasury or a commercial/investment bank is highly valued.
  • Exceptionally strong presentation skills with experience addressing diverse audiences.
  • Exceptional analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in advanced Excel; econometrics and modelling skills preferred.

Nice-to-have

  • Honours degree in Economics and/or postgraduate qualifications in Economics or Finance is preferred.
  • Knowledge of coding or statistical programming languages (e.g. Python/R) is an advantage but not essential.
