About the Department

Definition: Under general administrative program supervision from the Chief Dentist, Dentist is accountable for preventative, rehabilitative and community services for community members. Responsibilities include ensuring the quality of care to patients and families, and implementation of dental care plans. This is treated as an FLSA-Exempt.

Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks and other characteristics.  This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.

Position Duties

1.  Examines, diagnoses and treats commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems. Ensures dental staff are kept informed of appropriate patient treatment plans.  

2.  Educates patients and parents of patients on proper techniques for maintaining proper oral health.  

3.  Prescribes appropriate medications as needed for patients dental treatments.  

4.  Provides appropriate dental disease prevention measures. Diagnoses pathological or irregular conditions in patients.  

5.  Participates in development of public relations and effective communication on dental disease prevention within and outside the facility.

6.  Updates and records accurate and correct information into patient's dental heath record.  

7.  Performs other related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operation.    

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima- Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of and expertise in modern methods and principles of general dentistry and dental surgery, including preventative aspects, to diagnose and treat dental issues.
  • Knowledge of current methods and principles of oral hygiene and prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the mouth.
  • Knowledge of local anesthesia (pharmacology and techniques) used in providing dental treatment.
  • Knowledge of relevant established federal laws/regulations and standards regarding healthcare.
 
  • Skill in application of modern methods and principles of general dentistry and oral hygiene in order to evaluate, advise and manage the delivery of care.
  • Skill in application of methods, techniques and use of dental equipment in the delivery of patient care.
 
  • Ability to provide consultation and technical assistance to staff, quality healthcare to community members and ensure compliance and consistency with established laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures, etc.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative and use good judgment.
  • Ability to utilize proven organizational skills and ability to balance multiple tasks.  
  • Ability to diagnose and treat dental disease.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with health care professionals and others in order to provide information and/or direction.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain required documentation for patient files.
  • Ability to apply methods and techniques of preventive dental care and in the treatment and control of dental disease.
  • Ability to meet and comply with HIPAA/Confidentiality policies and procedures and ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive patient information and staff member information.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Education & Experience – Degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA); or other dental school, provided the education and knowledge acquired was substantially equivalent to that of graduates from an ADA approved school.
  • Applicants must be currently licensed to practice dentistry in a State or the District of Columbia. All candidates MUST submit proof of current, active and unrestricted license for verification. 

 

  • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

 

  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Special Requirements – Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of this position, successful completion of an extensive background investigation is required.  

  • Employees in, and applicants applying for, jobs providing direct services to children are subject to the “Community Code of Ordinances”, Chapter 11, “Minors”, Article X. “Investigation of Persons Working with Children”. 

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
