Under the direction of the Senior Manager of Test and Support Engineering, the Senior Traffic Applications Engineer serves as a subject matter expert in traffic engineering, traffic operations, and detection technologies, leading testing and validation efforts for Econolite’s traffic control and detection products. This role is responsible for testing advanced systems, analyzing complex customer applications, troubleshooting field issues, and ensuring products meet industry standards and operational requirements. This role will collaborate closely with development, product management, and systems engineering teams to influence product direction and feature implementation. With a strong background in traffic signal operations and detection system performance, the ideal candidate will also drive continuous improvement in testing methodologies and application support, helping to shape the future of Econolite’s traffic management and detection solutions.
DUTIES:
- Lead the creation and execution of comprehensive test plans and test cases for embedded software across Econolite’s traffic controller and detection product lines.
- Apply expert knowledge of traffic engineering principles, signal operations, and user behavior to develop realistic and high-impact test scenarios.
- Evaluate and troubleshoot detection product performance, including radar and video-based systems, using a strong understanding of analog/digital signals and network topologies.
- Work closely with engineers, product managers, project/program managers, and other team members throughout all stages of product development.
- Review customer specifications and field configurations, identifying gaps and proposing design-level solutions to meet or exceed performance and operational requirements.
- Serve as a senior technical resource, mentoring junior engineers and contributing to continuous improvement of test strategies, tooling, and support processes.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Transportation), Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent demonstrated technical experience.
- 7+ years of hands-on experience in traffic engineering, traffic signal operations, or detection systems, with progressive responsibility in technical roles.
- Proven expertise in traffic controllers, sensor technologies (radar and video), and signal turn-on/configuration procedures.
- Strong working knowledge of interpreting and troubleshooting electronic schematics, wiring diagrams, and field network topologies (including TCP/IP, VLANs, and routing/switching environments).
- Proficiency in Linux and Windows environments, with experience using diagnostic tools such as Wireshark, logic analyzers, or serial/network monitors.
- Experience working directly with customers or agencies, providing field support, troubleshooting, and technical resolution.
- Experience in test automation and scripting (e.g., Python, C, or C++) is a significant plus.
- CCNA, IMSA, or other relevant traffic and networking certifications are advantageous; strong understanding of network protocols, topologies, and diagnostic tools is strongly preferred.

COMPENSATION
The base pay range for this full-time exempt position is $100,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year plus benefits. Pay ranges are determined by various factors, including role, experience, and location. The pay range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire base pay rates for this position. Within the range, actual individual compensation is determined by various factors, including location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Primarily an office-based role with occasional work in lab or field environments. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds and travel to customer or company sites as needed.
