Position Summary
As a Master Machinist at Lexair, Inc., you will play a key role in our precision manufacturing processes. You will set up and operate manual machines such as lathes, mills, and grinders to produce high-quality components. This role requires expertise in reading blueprints, selecting the appropriate tools, and ensuring dimensional accuracy to meet customer specifications. In addition, you will be cross trained to QC, and most every machine in the shop. The Master Machinist is relied on to help trouble shoot, drive quality parts, and as a problem solver.
Key Responsibilities
- Machine Operation: Set up and operate machines such as lathes, mills, manual machines, and grinders to machine components according to specifications.

- Mills/Machining Centers
- Lathes, including Swiss Lathes
- Know your materials – type / color codes / material certifications / saw
- Blueprint Reading: Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and sketches to determine the necessary operations and tools required for machining.
- Precision Machining: Machine parts to tight tolerances, using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges to verify accuracy.
- Tooling Preparation: Select and prepare appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and other accessories required for the machining process.
- Material Handling: Manually insert parts into work holding devices, ensuring proper alignment and clamping to avoid damage or incorrect machining.
- Quality Control: Perform first-piece and in-process inspections to ensure components meet the required specifications. Collaborate with Quality Assurance for final part inspection.
- Be able to measure parts, identify issues, and liaison with other machinists to maintain top quality parts. Will spend time rotating through QC to learn quality lab operations, software and processes. Build to proficiency for regular back up and rotation through QC as needed.
- Adequate knowledge of Quality Instruments.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose machine malfunctions and take corrective actions to maintain accuracy and production flow.
- Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on manual machines, ensuring optimal performance and adherence to safety standards.
- Software: ERP (Made2Manage). Learn system and be able to look up bill of material, routings, and Item Master for information. Additionally, basics of Microsoft Office are important to learn.
- Mentorship / Leadership: Assist in troubleshooting, assist in training, be a mentor to others and a go to person for problem solving. Maintain a continuous improvement mentality in skill trade, and processes for the business.
- Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Basic technical training in manual machining, blueprint reading, and machine shop practices is Required
- Trade school or a minimum of 8-10 years of experience as a machinist is required.
- Skills and Experience:
- Proven experience in operating lathes, mills, manual machines and grinders.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and work orders.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with precision measuring equipment.
- Experience working with various materials including steel, aluminum, and brass.
- Basic math skills, including knowledge of trigonometry and geometry for layout and machining.
- Computer skills necessary to look up and print information and run company systems including ERP system, and Microsoft Office Including Email, Excel, Word and PDFs.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 or AS9100 standards is a plus.
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
- Environment:
- Work is primarily performed in a machine shop setting, with exposure to noise, coolants, and other machine operation elements.
- Physical Demands:
- Standing for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, reaching, and manual dexterity to operate machines.
- Ability to lift and move objects up to 75 lbs.
- Manual handling of parts and materials is required.
Work Schedule
- Days: Monday through Thursday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, or alternate schedules as needed and or designated.
- Break Periods for current schedule:
- Morning: 9:30 AM to 9:40 AM
- Noon: 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM
- Afternoon: 3:00 PM to 3:10 PM
- Overtime: May be required based on production demands, typically scheduled on Fridays or as determined by the Shop Supervisor.
