Wellabe is seeking a Sr. Accountant role to join our team. The Senior Accountant is responsible for complex accounting duties including preparing a wide range of financial records, providing value-added business analysis and communicating financial data in support of enterprise-wide initiatives.

Essential functions

  • Perform complex accounting duties including ad hoc journal entries, reconcile ledger accounts to source systems, investigation and follow up on discrepancies.
  • Work with leaders across the organization to provide value-added insight into the business through an analytical approach. Answer questions, help them understand the financial data and provide guidance for changes they can make to improve the business.
  • Compile, review and analyze complex statutory financial statements, notes to the financial statements and various exhibits and supplemental information timely and in accordance with Statement of Statutory Accounting Principles (SSAP).
  • Assist in the monthly, quarterly, and yearly financial close process including preparing balance sheets, income statements, variance analysis, reconciliations of intercompany accounts, account reconciliations, journal entry preparation, complex general ledger reconciliations and other related duties.
  • Assist in the preparation of complex monthly/quarterly reporting package and/or external audit reports for executive leadership, external stakeholders and to support Model Audit Rules; ensure high quality reports such as selected financial statements, KPI’s, analysis on key business trends, etc. are delivered timely and accurately.
  • Prepare difficult journal entries, reconcile complex ledger accounts, research, and apply accounting techniques and standard practices to ensure appropriate classification and recording of financial transactions.
  • Responsible for complex tax and/or statutory reporting.
    • Tax Reporting – Review and prepare/file required monthly, quarterly, and annual premium tax and municipal tax forms with federal, state and local government agencies, including any related tax research.
    • Statutory Reporting – Review and prepare required quarterly and annual statement filings as assigned, including any notes, schedules and exhibits.
  • Support a culture of financial transparency and continuous improvement by actively supporting initiatives and identifying opportunities for process improvements.
  • Lead, direct, mentor, and coach less experienced staff; either indirectly or through supervisory responsibilities.
  • Coordinate long term processes and lead complex projects to support department and/or company initiatives including providing status updates and communicating effectively to ensure processes are completed in a timely, accurate and comprehensive manner.

Success Profile

  • Advanced knowledge of the principles, processes, and practices related to financial accounting including the ability to adhere to Statement of Statutory Accounting Principles (SSAP), ensure the accuracy of financial documents, comply with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Strong functional skills including the ability to research, interpret and implement statutory accounting principles, applicable laws and regulations, and best practices.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational agility skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others and understanding of how to get things accomplished through formal and informal channels.
  • Strong time management skills including being self-directed with the ability to handle multiple complex tasks and prioritize self and any direct reports in a fast-paced environment with an attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve processes and utilize technology to improve efficiencies.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office Suite (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
  • General understanding of data mining tools such as Power BI, SQL or other related tools.
  • Advanced analytical skills with the ability to assess and resolve problems, think critically and methodically, using logic and make sound decisions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Combination of education and/or experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.
  • CPA (or progress toward) and/or other relevant designation/certifications, a plus.
  • 4+ years’ related experience.
  • Big-4 audit, insurance, and/or tax experience, a plus.
