Location: Quincy, IL
Pay Range: $63,211.20 - $94,827.20 Annually | Based on Relevant Experience
Schedule: Full-time, 40+ hours per week with on-call responsibilities to support 24/7 Birth Center operations

About the Role:
The Birthing Assistant is a licensed Registered Nurse who works with midwives and the Birth Center team to provide safe, family-centered care from prenatal through postpartum and newborn periods. You’ll use independent nursing judgment to assess clients and newborns, provide hands-on labor and postpartum support, help with procedures and emergencies, and contribute to quality improvement, policy, and staff training.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Perform nursing assessments for clients and newborns; document and report findings to the midwife.

• Recognize and escalate clinical changes that require provider intervention.

• Provide education on pregnancy, labor, postpartum recovery, newborn care, and breastfeeding.

• Deliver hands-on labor and postpartum support (comfort measures, positioning, basic clinical interventions within scope).

• Administer medications, treatments, and point-of-care tests as ordered and within licensure.

• Support and, when needed, initiate emergency interventions (neonatal resuscitation, maternal stabilization) until provider assumes care.

• Maintain accurate, timely medical record documentation and follow infection-prevention and safety protocols.

• Help develop and implement Birth Center policies and assist with survey/accreditation prep.

• Mentor and precept new staff and students; participate in quality improvement, audits, and case reviews.

Qualifications

• Active, unencumbered RN license in Illinois.

• Completion of a birth assistant training program or equivalent maternal-child health clinical experience.

• Current BLS certification required; NRP certification required within 6 months of hire.

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in obstetric, maternal-child health, or birth center setting preferred.

• Ability to exercise independent nursing judgment in labor, postpartum, and newborn care.
