About the Department

Under direction, leads, trains, assists in directing and participates in the work of an area crew engaged in the construction, maintenance and repair of: County roads, County drainage, culverts and related structures.

This position will work a 9/80 Alternate Work Schedule. Occasional overtime, evening, weekend, and standby work may be required.   

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill any future opening(s), including Part-Time and Extra Help, in this class for up to six months.

Position Duties

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other related duties may be required and assigned.

  1. Leads, trains, assists in directing and participates in the construction, maintenance and repair of County roads, and County drainage, including patching and resurfacing a road section, constructing new roads, and digging out or repairing drains, ditches, and culverts.
  2. Inspects roads for needed repairs; determines the extent of repairs; assists in scheduling repairs; assists in preparing field estimates of road materials and supplies for construction and maintenance of roads.
  3. Instructs road crews in the skilled and safe use of various heavy and light road equipment and stationary machinery; serves as Assistant Area Roads Coordinator in his/her absence.
  4. Assists in maintaining records of road crew time and materials used.
  5. Assists in the orientation, training and evaluation of personnel.
  6. Identifies training and safety needs.
  7. Participates in staff meetings. 
  8. Operates heavy and light road construction equipment in the maintenance and construction of County roads; performs heavy semi-skilled construction work and manual labor as required.

Minimum Qualifications

The following are the minimum qualifications for this position.  Possession of these qualifications does not ensure that an applicant will be interviewed.  Applications will be reviewed in comparison with all other applications received. 

Knowledge of:  Principles of supervision and training; materials, methods and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of roads; operation and care of equipment and tools used in road maintenance work and construction work; safety principles and practices associated in road maintenance and construction work.
 
Ability to:  Train and instruct employees; act as lead worker in work assignments with a minimum of direction; operate heavy and light equipment; perform heavy physical labor; interact with public; maintain records of employees' time and materials used; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; follow oral and written directions; secure cooperation and teamwork among staff.
 
Education and Experience:  Equivalent to two years of experience as a Public Works Equipment Operator in Sutter County including some lead worker responsibilities, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Requires the ability to maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under varied circumstances; Requires the ability to exert a considerable amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and to stoop, crouch, climb and lift in performance of manual labor; operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles used in performance of daily tasks; ability to work around electrical currents and building materials in a safe manner; ability to see; ability to hear and communicate orally; may be subject to uncomfortable working conditions including exposure to dust, noise, heat or cold; must be able to perceive color, shapes, and forms; requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
 
License or Certificate: Must possess and maintain a valid class "A" driver's license.  Must maintain a driving record that will meet commercial insurance requirements.
