The Ontario Police Department is seeking a highly motivated individual for the position of Crime Prevention Specialist. The Crime Prevention Specialist completes specialized work in various non-safety assignments for the Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit and is responsible for educating the community on crime prevention topics, including theft prevention, home/commercial security, workplace safety, and child safety programs.
The ideal candidate for this position will be a highly skilled individual capable of effectively explaining policies and procedures; possesses strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to gather, summarize and analyze data, prepare administrative reports, speak and present before large groups; excellent interpersonal skills cultivating positive working relationships in the department and among the community; and is dedicated to enhancing the safety of the community. Strong candidates will possess experience or training in crime prevention methods and practices and have the ability to identify problems using various forms of data.
The successful candidate will embody the Police Department's mission and vision as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the principles of the City's Customer Service Philosophy – Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving.
- The Eligibility List will consist of both internal and external applicants who meet the qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
- The hiring department has the discretion to consider internal applicants on the Eligibility List prior to considering external candidates on the Eligibility List.
- The City of Ontario reserves the right, if necessary, to accept only the first one hundred (100) applications from applicants that meet the qualification guidelines below.

Background Investigation
All appointments to this position are subject to a satisfactory background investigation conducted by the Ontario Police Department. The background investigation will include the following: passing of a polygraph test and the successful completion of a post-offer medical exam (including drug screen). Candidates may be disqualified from further consideration during the background investigation for a variety of reasons including if they have: an excessive number of traffic citations and/or collisions; arrests and/or convictions; a history of illegal substance abuse; poor credit history (factors include bankruptcy, foreclosures, liens, repossessions, and recency); or thefts from a previous employer. The following list describes some areas that are covered in the background investigation:
- Your relatives, references, and acquaintances are asked to comment on your suitability for a career in law enforcement.
- The information supplied regarding your educational history is examined and verified.
- You must list a history of your residences.
- Your work history and experience are examined with regard to your dependability, relationships with fellow workers, trustworthiness, and general job performance.
- Military service records are subject to verification.
- The background investigation considers your management of personal finances (however, being in debt does not automatically disqualify you).
- Your criminal, driving, and insurance records are evaluated. Felony convictions will be grounds for disqualification from the selection process.

Position Duties
- Develops, plans, and conducts presentations on crime prevention for residents, including Neighborhood Watch programs and home security assessments.
- Identifies problems through community input, review of police reports and calls for service.
- Works with other City departments to develop crime prevention plans to address identified concerns.
- Develops and updates literature on crime prevention.
- Develops and coordinates events with other City departments, public agencies, and private companies.
- Coordinates and supports the Police Department's Volunteer Program (S.P.O.T. and V.I.P.).
- Develops, plans, and conducts crime prevention programs for school and youth organizations.
- Writes articles, press releases and other community outreach documents for the Police Department and City publications, including the Ontario Living Magazine.
- Coordinates and participates in police awareness programs for schools within the City.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or recognized equivalent, supplemented by college coursework in public speaking, community relations, criminal justice, or a closely related field.
Experience
One year of professional or training experience involving crime prevention methods and practices.
Desirable
Public speaking experience.
License
