The Institute for Satellite Geodesy and Inertial Sensing (SI) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Bremen, is primarily dedicated to research questions in the context of the use of quantum technologies and quantum sensors and develops quantum measurement techniques for innovative applications, including the realisation of prototype solutions.

What to expect

In the framework of the project "PLANET - Positioning and Location Analysis using Navigation and quantum-Enhanced Technology", you will be part of the QuantumFrontiers Cluster of Excellence. In this project you will deal with interplanetary navigation, Doppler measurements and the latest developments in the field of acceleration sensors, which also include quantum-based technologies. You will further develop our existing simulation tool to calculate the orbit of a space probe to the Moon and Mars. Based on this, you will create data sets that will be used by project partners as the basis for gravitational field recovery for the Moon and Mars. For data exchange, you will develop a simulation workflow which involves the definition of interfaces and data formats. Active participation in the events of the Cluster of Excellence will round off your work.

Your tasks

  • Analyzing the current state of research on the topics of interplanetary navigation, Doppler measurements and acceleration sensors
  • Developing a function to determine transfer orbits for the Moon and Mars in an existing simulation tool
  • Development of a simulation workflow with partner institutions of the Cluster of Excellence
  • Creation of simulation data for the orbits of the space probes considered in the project
  • Active participation in the events of the QuantumFrontiers network
  • Independent organization of your own work processes in the form of agile project management
  • Presentation of research results at conferences and publication in journals

Your Profile

  • Completed scientific university degree (Master / Diploma) in natural sciences (e.g. in physics) or engineering (e.g. in aerospace engineering or geodesy) or other relevant degree programmes.
  • Expertise in the field of orbital dynamics modelling
  • Knowledge of control engineering
  • Very good knowledge of Matlab/Simulink
  • Experience in the use of version control with GitHub/GitLab
  • Experience in the use of Python and C/C++ programming languages
  • Very good written and spoken English skills

We look forward to getting to know you!
