Essex Westford School District (EWSD) has an opportunity for a full-time Assistant Principal to join the Leadership Team at Essex Middle School (EMS), this is a temporary, one-year position beginning in October 2025 through the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year. The Assistant Principal supports and collaborates with the Principal and Directors to provide the optimal educational environment for each student.

Candidates with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply:

  • Master's degree in School Administration or other appropriate disciplines, plus five years as a classroom teacher (minimum of three years at secondary level) or educational leader, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
  • Hold, or be eligible to hold, a valid Vermont Educator license with a Principal endorsement 1-91/3-91. (Level II preferred)
  • Be able to hold conversations with empathy about controversial topics while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to lead conversations and professional development to promote understanding and adoption of effective practices related to proficiency-based learning and reporting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of restorative practices.
  • Demonstrated mastery in vision-based and strategic planning and development, research and design, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive and supportive relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Demonstrated facilitation skills, effective communication, collaboration, and engagement strategies that foster understanding and a sense of community.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Ability to effectively manage student and adult behaviors to ensure safe and respectful learning and working environments for all.
  • Understanding and ability to give guidance and leadership in many parts of differentiated instruction, supported learning environments, formative assessment, student engagement, and other instructional and classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to successfully facilitate and lead collaborative faculty teams in professional learning communities.

If you are committed to the success of all students, have leadership experience, and do not meet all the qualifications listed, you are still encouraged to apply. EWSD is committed to considering out-of-state candidates who are eligible to hold a Vermont educator license but do not yet hold a license in this state. EWSD is willing to request a provisional license for candidates who are otherwise qualified and do not currently hold the required license but are willing to work toward licensure.
