About the Department

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This position is represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - Technicians (IBEW-Tech), Local 1547 and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

DEPARTMENT: Public Transportation

HOURS OF WORK: Shifts vary; schedule based on seniority; 40 hours per week within Monday through Sunday. Night Shift

Position Duties

Reporting to the Maintenance General Foreman, provides day-to-day supervision to employees and functions of the maintenance 
division's night shift. Sets priorities and goals for shift based on guidance from the General Foreman, monitors productivity and 
safety in conformance with division policies and procedures. Review maintenance management system (MMS) inputs daily for 
personnel productivity and accurate recording of time and materials. Identifies discrepancies and solutions for corrective action by 
Lead and maintenance personnel. Develop procedures to fully utilize MMS for work-orders, and reporting. Create and revise 
processes for a multitude of tasks to standardize methods used by personnel. Recruits, interviews, and evaluates shift personnel. 
Coordinates staffing coverage during absences by personnel. Coordinates with contractors and vendors to ensure timely support of 
operations. Identifies and presents solutions to problems and obstacles. May fulfill role of General Foreman during absences. 
Investigates accidents and employee performance, prepares investigation documents and drafts disciplinary documents as required. 
Supports substance abuse testing program compliance. Prepares, presents, and documents safety topics for recurring meetings 
with shift personnel. Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal requirements regarding fleet maintenance for public
transportation.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma, GED or equivalent and six (6) months experience in cleaning and/or servicing (i.e. checking and replenishing vehicle fluids and light bulbs) various types of automotive, truck, bus, construction, stationary equipment, or equivalent.  

Must possess a valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction at time of hire. Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.

Satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Driver's License, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a medical physical and functional capacity examination and will also be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.

All required certifications and/or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.


Military Service Interview Preference


Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.


Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
