Program Description: 
The Foot Care Nurse provides high-quality foot care to clients of the BMHC, including comprehensive assessments, interventions and education. By focusing on individuals with foot-related concerns, particularly those with diabetes and other chronic conditions, this role will contribute to improving their overall health and quality of life.
 
Position Duties:
  • Perform thorough foot assessments of patients' feet to identify potential issues such as infections, ulcers, deformities, or circulation problems, particularly in patients with diabetes or other chronic conditions.
  • Develop individualized care plans. Provide a wide range of foot care services, including nail care, callus removal and the treatment of foot conditions, ensuring a holistic approach to their overall health.
  • Administer wound care for foot ulcers, injuries, and infections, including cleaning, dressing, and monitoring healing progress.
  • Monitor high-risk patients, especially those with diabetes or circulatory conditions, to prevent foot complications like infections, ulcers, and amputations.
  • Educate clients, health care professionals and caregivers on proper foot care techniques and preventive measures, including daily foot inspection, hygiene, nail care, and the importance of early intervention for foot problems.
  • Work closely with other health care professionals to ensure coordinated care for clients with foot-related concerns.
  • Educate patients on how to prevent infections by following good foot hygiene and wound care practices
  • Adhere to infection control and safety protocols. Ensure an adequate supply of all suitable disposable materials required to maintain continuity of service.
  • Ensure adequate supply of materials, by checking and managing the stock of necessary disposable items to keep services running smoothly.
  • Maintain clean treatment areas, regularly clean and disinfect treatment areas to prevent infections.
  • Dispose of used materials like dressings and gloves in a safe and hygienic manner.
  • Ensure all patient records are up-to-date, accurate, and securely stored in accordance with privacy regulations and organizational policies.
  • Review and update patient documentation regularly, ensuring all relevant medical information, treatment plans, and progress notes are properly recorded and maintained for future reference.
 
Qualifications:
  • BScN.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Professional Foot Care Certificate from a recognized institution.
  • At least 2 years of clinical experience as a registered nurse, with a focus on wound care or diabetes management.
  • Strong knowledge of foot care procedures, including wound care, debridement, and nail care.
  • Knowledge of infection control processes.
  • Knowledge of infection control protocols and safety standards.
  • Proficient in using relevant medical equipment and supplies for foot assessments and treatments.
  • Able to meet the standards of nursing practice of the College of Nurses.
  • CPR certification within the last 12 months (BCLS at a minimum).
  • Excellent communication skills to educate patients and collaborate with healthcare teams. 
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
