Job Description
GUIDANCE TECHNICIAN
DEFINITION
Under specific supervision of an approved certificated person, assist in managing a guidance center; compile, develop, evaluate, maintain, and disseminate educational, vocational, scholarship, and related post graduate planning information; assist students with planning, class selection, and scheduling; monitor student progress in meeting graduation requirements; assist in administering District testing programs; and perform related duties as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES
1. Assist with student registration, enrollment procedures, and student course program changes;
2. Monitor student progress in meeting graduation requirements;
3. Assist with the administration of competency testing, California Assessment Program, and/or other state/district/campus testing;
4. Assist students with college testing and application procedures;
5. Assist students with scholarship information and application procedures;
6. Administer, score, and interpret appropriate interest surveys and aptitude/ability tests, i.e., Kuder, Strong-Campbell, California Occupational Preference Survey tests (COPS), Career Ability Placement Survey (CAPS), General Aptitude Test Battery (GAB), and Valper Component Work Sample Series;
7. Participate in and may conduct workshops, involving career education development and infusion into classrooms;
8. Provide in-service for school staff in the use of specialized materials and equipment, such as occupation/college computer systems;
9. Conduct career center orientations and visitations for students, faculty, educators, and community;
10. Schedule, publicize, and promote career center services and programs, i.e., college and vocational speakers, career fairs, field trips, college nights, open house, and back-to-school nights; and
11. Maintain a student career record (SCR) on every student, including student lists by occupation/career interests;
12. Assist with daily attendance procedures; monitor student attendance;
13. Receive, order, and catalog all college and career education materials and equipment;
14. Maintain a central occupational file system that collates the sources related to vocations;
15. Process data into the computer terminal, regarding registration and scheduling;
16. Arrange for repairs and servicing of career center equipment;
17. Supervise student assistants;
18. Provide work direction to personnel as assigned;
19. Perform clerical and other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
1. Knowledge of basic standardized testing methods;
2. Knowledge of concepts of labor trends and sources of labor trend information;
3. Knowledge of specialized filing systems, such as U.S.E.O. clusters and Wilma Bonnet indexing;
4. Ability to successfully complete a training program in career guidance and education, with emphasis on career center management and testing procedures;
5. Ability to understand informed decision-making theory regarding vocational choices—Student Guidance System (SGS);
6. Ability to work with students individually, in groups, and in classroom situations regarding career exploration/decision-making;
7. Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion;
8. Ability to operate computer terminal and related functions; and
9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination equivalent to:
1. Successful completion of a Guidance Technician Certificated Training Course;
2. Completion of two years of college or equivalent, including or supplemented by course in behavioral sciences and general office practices;
3. Successful completion of specified training in testing administration and interpretation, and
4. Two years of experience, involving direct and personal contact responsibilities, such as personnel training or tutoring preferably in an educational environment, involving human relations skills.

Comments and Other Information
New three-year collective bargaining agreement; Salary schedule beginning 7.1.25 will include a 2% salary schedule increase and a 2% off-schedule payment at year-end pending ratification.
2026–2027: Salary schedule increase of 60% of the statutory funded COLA, plus any funded ongoing augmentations as provided in the State Budget Act; 2% off-schedule payment at year-end pending ratification
2027–2028: Salary schedule increase of 50% of the statutory funded COLA, plus any funded ongoing augmentations as provided in the State Budget Act; 2% off-schedule payment at year-end pending ratification
