About the Department

The Field Coordinator will oversee the day-to-day responsibility of vendors, operations of private bus service providers, and, in some cases, MBTA buses to support emergency and planned subway and commuter rail closures. This individual is also responsible for oversight of contracted private bus operators who provide fixed-route bus service. This individual will be assigned an area supervising all contracted transportation personnel and MBTA personnel, if needed, within that area, and ensuring the safety of passengers and employees through the enforcement of Authority standards and policies. The Field Coordinator will also provide assistance to MBTA Bus Inspectors, Shuttle Coordinators, Roadway Supervisors, Superintendents, and Operators when needed. The schedule for this position is Tuesday- Saturday split shift (noon-8pm).

Position Duties

  • Monitor, expedite, and control private bus service during rail diversions and for other bus service contracts. 
  • Monitor the performance of third-party vendors in the field and provide in-field instruction/direction as needed. 
  • Conduct checks throughout the system and maintain written reports/logs that capture data and vendor performance. 
  • Identify ways to improve productivity and service delivery. 
  • Assist in the development and installation of signage and Traffic Management plans, controls, and devices. 
  • Conduct site visits before, during, and after diversions to validate appropriateness, accessibility, and location of sites. 
  • Work collaboratively with other departments and external partners to constantly strive to improve and innovate on alternative service and customer experience during planned and unplanned diversions, including customer technology and wayfinding. 
  • Responsible for vendor management, ensuring contractors meet all service level agreements and contractual obligations. 
  • Responding or reporting to work as directed by supervisory personnel for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Must be available periodically to support planned rail closures and monitor implementation in the field or remotely of private shuttle service outside of regular work hours. 
  • Upholding the rights and interests of a workforce by ensuring the fair and consistent application and strict adherence to the rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable), and policies of the Authority, including the EEO, Anti-Discrimination, Anti-Harassment, and Anti-Retaliation policies.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle, including buses, to visit work sites and to assist at emergencies, shuttles, and/or events as needed. 
  • Use the transit service to reach work locations as needed. 
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) from an accredited institution.
  • Five (5) years of experience in Bus Transportation Field Operations.
  • Related experience in a supervisory role.
  • Current full–time status.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Database, PeopleSoft, or Mainframe applications.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.
  • Willingness to work any shift and/or location as assigned or directed.
  • Availability to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days a week.
  • Ability to supervise and work effectively with a diverse workforce.
  • Successful applicants must have the English language skills required for the effective performance of the position.

Other Qualifications

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Business, Transportation, or a related field. 
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with general knowledge, air brakes, and passenger endorsements. 
  • Experience as a former Instructor, Dispatcher, Inspector, or Supervisor of Transportation or Logistics.
