Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience:
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED, a two-year degree in automotive or heavy equipment, and have at least two (2) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy equipment; OR possess a high school diploma or GED and have at least four (4) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy equipment.
- Must possess a valid Minnesota Class D (standard) driver's license and be able to drive; and obtain a Minnesota CDL Class A driver's license and a tanker endorsement within one hundred eighty (180) days of employment.
- Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the job proficiently may be substituted for the above requirements.
Nature of Work:
Under direct supervision of the Central Garage Superintendent, Central Garage Supervisor, or Transit Supervisor, the Heavy Equipment Technician A performs a wide variety of skilled, technical maintenance, and repair work on automotive and a wide variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment. May be assigned to one or more functional areas within the department. Daily work is based on organizational values.
Candidates with a valid MN Class D (standard) driver's license are eligible to apply. If hired, we will train you to obtain the required MN Class A CDL (commercial driver's license).

Position Duties
Primary Essential Work Functions:
- Safely performs major maintenance and repair work on gasoline and diesel engines, manual transmissions, auto transmissions, differentials, and other units.
- Safely performs major mechanical work on suspension and chassis systems, cooling, fuel, electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Safely performs major tune-ups using appropriate testing equipment.
- Safely operates welding equipment to repair broken parts from automotive and other mechanized equipment as necessary.
- Accurately determines the parts and time necessary to complete assigned maintenance / repairs.
- Safely tests maintenance and repair work to ensure satisfactory results.
- Recommends repairs for warranty coverage.
- Maintains necessary paper and electronic records or forms on work performed, and accurately records all work completed in accordance with City of Mankato protocol.
- Performs DOT inspections on equipment.
- Performs custodial maintenance duties as required.
- Assists Public Works Operations division with snow removal activities.
- Maintains all certifications as required by the City of Mankato.
Other Work Functions:
- Assists with the overall maintenance of the Public Works building and grounds.
- Performs physical and mental demands and work environment requirements for this position.
- Attendance during regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
- Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and community customers.
- Performs other related work as assigned or apparent.

Minimum Qualifications
Conditions of Employment:
- Must possess a valid Minnesota Class D (standard) driver's license and be able to drive; and obtain a Minnesota CDL Class A driver's license and a tanker endorsement within one hundred eighty (180) days of employment.
- Must be available to work overtime or be on-call at various hours beyond the regular work shift in order to meet the demands of the garage.
- Satisfactory completion of pre-employment and annual FMCSA Clearinghouse queries, pre-employment background examination, physical examination, and drug testing.
- Must meet expectations of the work functions and knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
- Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
- Must comply with data practices policies and standards relative to not public data. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished the not public data must be properly stored according to city policy and the Minnesota Statutes.
- Safety Sensitive Notice. This is a safety sensitive position which requires cannabis pre-employment drug testing. Safety sensitive position means a job in which an impairment caused by drug, alcohol, or cannabis usage would threaten the health and safety of any person.
Other Qualifications
General working hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and evening, weekend, holidays, and outside of regular hours as necessary. Must have the ability to field calls after hours as needed.
