Position Summary
Performs complex professional and administrative work in the planning, organizing, and managing of Encompass Learning Center and RISE. Work is performed under the general direction of the Chief Academic Officer. The position supervises assigned staff, creates a safe environment conducive to learning, implements curriculum, and other duties associated with successfully operating a designated program.

Essential Functions
- Maintains an effective educational program consistent with state and federal guidelines and the philosophy, policies, and goals of the School Board.
- Evaluates teachers and other employees as assigned.
- Assesses student referrals to ensure they meet eligibility for programs based on established criteria and makes determinations regarding placement.
- Interprets and enforces school and school system policies and regulations.
- Enforces standards of discipline, health, safety, and general welfare for students.
- Counsels students and administers disciplinary action when necessary.
- Conferences with parents of program students regularly concerning academic progress.
- Assists in preparing and administering the program’s budget and finances.
- Attends monthly principal workshops and other relevant professional development activities as required.
- Proposes schedules of classes and extracurricular activities; helps schedule courses, students, and teachers; supervises the reporting and monitoring of student attendance.
- Supervises employees as assigned; serves as primary contact for substitute teachers; monitors and plans for extracurricular activities.
- Assists in planning and implementing a systematic method of supervising the instructional program through observations, documentation, and follow-up conferences; ensures the instructional time is protected from interruptions and intrusions.
- Explains and interprets a system-wide curriculum/instructional goals and objectives to teachers, parents, students, and the community.
- Coordinates transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other school support services; conducts safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
- Maintains facilities in a safe, orderly, and attractive manner; oversees custodial and building maintenance services.
- Requisitions supplies, textbooks, and equipment; assists in maintaining inventories and distributing materials, books, and equipment; maintains records and receipts for materials received.
- Maintains various files; prepares periodic and special reports as required.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all facets of a high school and the ability to apply them to the needs of a school.
- Thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures.
- Knowledge and practical skills in curriculum development, instructional practices, interpretation of test data, and budget development.
- Ability to assist with administering and managing the operation of a secondary school and establish and maintain standards of behavior.
- Must possess the ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
- Skill in using personal computers and related software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment.
- Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in oral and written formats.
- Ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the School Board, community agencies, parents, students, and the general public.
Qualifications, Education, and Experience
- Master's Degree and/or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in administration and supervision.
- At least five years of successful experience as a teacher with supervisory experience at the secondary level is required.
- Experience in an alternative school setting is required.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner both orally and in written form.
- Regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, and repetitive motions.
- Requires frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds.
- Frequently requires walking and occasionally requires standing, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, and lifting.
- Work has standard vision requirements; visual inspection involves minor defects and/or small parts.
- Vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas using the spoken word and accurately convey detailed or important instructions to others, loudly or quickly.
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, receive detailed information through oral communications, and/or make fine distinctions in sound.
- Requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
- Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle or equipment and be mobile enough to travel and monitor all aspects of the school program in the settings within the area of assignment.
- Occasionally, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and bloodborne pathogens may require wearing specialized personal protective equipment.
Special Requirements
- Possession of or ability to acquire an appropriate license(s), certificate (s), and/or endorsement (s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the School Board.
- A valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia may be required to operate division-owned/leased motor vehicles. The incumbent’s driving record will be subject to periodic review and must be accepted per the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual provisions.

Evaluation
The performance of this position will be evaluated under the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.
