The Medical Assistant II position functions and is considered department subject matter expert (SME) and responsible for leading operational tasks and project work in the department. Provides general front and back office support to professional staff. Escorts patients to exam rooms. Maintains clean, neat and well-stocked exam rooms. Must have knowledge of medical front and back office procedures. Provides quality phone service by scheduling patients or referring caller to appropriate party. Answers phone messages from patients promptly. Maintains patient information that is accurate and charts/paperwork are filed correctly. Maintains medical records. Under the direction of a Provider, the Medical Assistant II performs a variety of duties in connection with the examination and treatment of patients. May be assigned to a specialist. This position takes a pro-active approach utilizing available resources to best serve the patient population. Performs a variety of clerical support duties including receptionist, telephone, scheduling, message management and data input. Utilizes knowledge and skill to provide appropriate care in accordance with the organization's policies, procedures and protocols and Arizona validated competencies. This position works in a team model to improve the patient's experience, create better communication and access to care, and support processes that will improve patient satisfaction.
Essential Functions
- Expected to mentor and assist with leading the work efforts of other team members. Is considered department subject matter expert (SME) and responsible for leading operational tasks and project work in the department. Performs regular internal audits on department processes and procedures. Provides consultation on complex projects and is considered to be the top level contributor regarding Epic systems or other related department systems, including systems training and processes. Responsible for establishing timely patient experience and service recovery efforts. Considered the top contributor for leading staff in providing timely patient experience and service recovery.
- Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients. Escorts the patient to the examining room, obtains a brief history, documents chief complaint takes vital signs to include weight and temperature. Preps the patient for exam, assists the physician/clinician on exams and any special procedures. Assists to ensure that the Epic in-basket responses are is reviewed and results communicated in a timely manner. May travel to off site locations to perform diagnostic testing and assist in physical exam components, TB testing, Injections, phlebotomy and others. May administer and record injections and TB testing under the supervision and order of the physician. Performs venipuncture and obtains specimens, performs CLIA waived lab tests. Performs office procedures including, but not limited to, PFT, UDS, EBT, EKG, fit testing, within the scope of practice as directed by provider.
- Receives telephone calls from patients, pharmacy and others; documents and relays information to provider for action. Phones pharmacy with approved medication orders/refills.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Completion of a MA training program - Required
- High School Diploma or GED - Required
- 6 months experience as a Medical Assistant. - Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) BLS - Required
- Completion of an approved training program OR completion of an unapproved training program and successfully passes the medical assistant examination administered by a certifying organization accredited by either the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or the American National Standards Institute as described by the Arizona Administrative Code (Chapter 16 – Arizona Medical Board - R4-16-401 and R4-16-101) OR completes a United States Armed Forces medical services training program - Required
- Fingerprint Clearance Card - State Have a current Fingerprint Clearance card, or within seven (7) working days after employment shall apply and be eligible for a Fingerprint Clearance Card (Pediatric Behavioral Health Sites ONLY) - Required
- Medical Assistant Certification (e.g., CMA, CCMA, RMA) **HonorHealth will reimburse the cost of the successful completion of the certification exam. If you do not receive your certification within the assigned period, you will no longer meet the minimum qualification of the position and will be terminated - Preferred
