Under direction of the Senior Director, Facilities, Maintenance, Operations & Transportation, to oversee the maintenance program of the District and to supervise the supervisors of various trades (i.e. carpentry, electrical, heavy equipment, locksmith, painting, plumbing) and any trades-related supervisorial subordinates. The position may directly supervise multidisciplinary trades positions assigned to the Maintenance Department for the purpose of operating a "Special Projects Maintenance Team" in coordination with subordinate staff. To plan, schedule, coordinate, and control financial management the work of maintenance and repair teams performing trades services at various District sites within authorized budget allocations for personnel, supplies and materials. Incumbent is expected to develop methods and procedures and to solve problems encountered using independent judgment consistent with policy, regulations, or departmental standards.
Position Duties
Supervise the work of all maintenance and building trades supervisors in the district.
Develop, analyze, monitor, and continuously improve work processes and procedures to ensure compliance with Federal, State, County, City, District and any other codes, regulations, and standards related to maintenance trades.
Examine work orders and project requests to be performed by assigned teams to assess priority status, time, materials, tools, and equipment needed to perform the requested work.
Develop schedules for recurring and preventive maintenance work.
Visit school sites to analyze problems and work requests and to inspect facilities for quality and coordinate needed maintenance work.
Prepare and initiate work orders; enter time and materials data to completed work orders; plan and layout work, prepare sketches, drawing, and schedules, develop material lists, research availability and pricing of materials, and develop cost estimates for facilities maintenance, construction, and related projects.
Schedule and monitor facilities maintenance staff work projects; prepare oral and written directives; may interpret, enforce and apply policies and regulatory requirements controlling the work of the assigned maintenance team.
Coordinates with assigned supervisors in arranging necessary training opportunities for maintenance staff.
Coordinates with assigned supervisors in developing and implementing skill, health and safety training; may prepare reports of accidents and injury.
Plan and monitor preventive maintenance and servicing activities are in place and accomplished; recommends equipment replacement.
Confers with school site personnel and district office staff to troubleshoot problems, to discuss cost estimates, to schedule work projects; to obtain approval to make expenditures to be charged to the customer's budget; to discuss quality and timeliness of work performed; may instruct site operations staff in the performance of minor repair work.
Report on accomplishments and recommend and obtain authorization for major purchases and changes in procedure and practice.
Plan and schedule non-routine work; to problem solve; confer with other departmental supervisors to coordinate work with trades and operations teams and shops and to coordinate the use of shared equipment and other resources.
Contact vendors to investigate parts, tools, and materials availability and pricing; initiate requisitions and place orders in accordance with departmental policy; brainstorm with suppliers to resolve technical repair problems and to locate parts and materials; research technical manuals to resolve technical problems.
Prepare periodic and special budgetary and administrative reports.
Perform preventive maintenance and safety inspection and operate District vehicle to and from work sites and vendor locations obeying traffic laws and observing defensive driving practices.
Wear identification and protective clothing and use safety equipment and devices.
Read and keep abreast of trends, new materials and equipment, and the codes and regulations of assigned trades and assure compliance with federal, State and local codes and appropriate health and safety procedures.
Serve on assigned committees and teams; maintain manual and automated records; participate in District mandated training and retraining programs.
Evaluate employee performance and make recommendations for improvement and commendation on outstanding performance.
Perform related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by specialized training in one or more building trades. At least five years of advanced journey-level experience in a building trade is required. Three years of experience in the Compton Unified School District in a journey level trades classification is required. Two years as a trade supervisor is desired. Willingness to obtain and participate in formal training or course work in team-building, supervision, leadership, work/project planning, scheduling, and related areas is required.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License.
Possession of journey-level licenses for construction-related trades is desirable.
