Sandblasting strips a surface of dirt, rust, old paint, and grease, and prepares it for refinishing and repair using pneumatic, electrical, or mechanical equipment. This job relies on manual labor and is physically demanding. Because a sandblaster’s work environment is often dusty and loud, specialized protective clothing is worn in addition to safety-toe work boots, and hearing protection.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Abrades surfaces of metal or hard-composition objects to remove adhering scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt, and to impart specified finish, using abrasive-blasting equipment
- Shovels or pours abrasives, such as sand, grit, or shot of specified grade into machine hopper.
- Masks specified areas of object to protect from abrading action.
- Loads parts on racks in enclosed rooms, into tumbling barrels, or into cabinets.
- Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle or into tumbling barrel.
- Starts equipment that directs blast or flow of abrasive-laden compressed air, gas, or liquid over surface of parts.
- Manually directs nozzle over surface of large parts or inserts arms through glove-fitted cabinet openings and manipulates small parts under nozzle for specified interval.
- May examine finished parts to ensure conformance to specifications.
- Maintain all OSHA safety standards in the performance of duties
- Perform other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Prefer High School diploma, GED or equivalent and 1 year of previous sandblasting experience, supplemented by professional painting training.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Must be dependable, reliable, and mature enough to handle equipment in a safe and sensible manner.
- Perform sandblasting equipment maintenance in assigned work area.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Safe operation of sandblasting equipment with proper “PPE,” Personal Protective Equipment.
- Perform a variety of sandblasting related tasks for extended periods of time, which may include heavy manual labor.
