We are currently looking for suitable, motivated and team-oriented professional for the position of Release Train Engineer

Purpose of the Role

The primary purpose of the Release Train Engineer (RTE) role is to lead the Agile Release Train (ART) to deliver value effectively and predictably. The RTE is an active delivery leader responsible for ensuring the ART operates as a coherent, high-performing system. This includes ensuring alignment and protecting teams from overcommitment, leading to effective planning, reliable forecasts, and ensuring the ART delivers sustainable, stakeholder-aligned outcomes. RTEs also lead the identification and removal of systemic impediments that hinder flow and performance.

The role leads the planning and scheduling of features, change management, project metrics production and analysis within the ART working with colleagues across Technology and Product to prioritorise delivery in line with strategic, regulatory and growth objectives.

The position reports into the Portfolio Lead and helps plan annual portfolios based on business needs, manage portfolio health, risks, dependencies, and compliance, and support the development and advocacy of Portfolio Operations delivery framework, develop standard project/program delivery methodologies to be used across all technology change delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Alignment & Value Delivery

·Lead the connection between strategy and execution: Guide Features through upstream discovery and decomposition (ART Kanban) in partnership with Portfolio stakeholders, Product Management, Tower leads, Architects, and other key stakeholders. Ensure quarterly committed Features and PI Objectives directly align to portfolio Epics and broader business outcomes

·Drive a shared understanding of direction: Partner with Product Management, Tower Leads, and Architects to create a compelling vision and roadmap for the ART

·Own ART-level outcome focus: Define, measure, and communicate ART-level success measures that go beyond just throughput of work

·Lead for effectiveness: Ensure the ART structure, events, and leadership roles promote accountability, collaboration, and team empowerment

Planning, Scheduling & Flow Optimisation

·Lead ART planning and execution rhythm: Lead high-quality PI Planning, ART Syncs (S2), and Inspect & Adapt events that result in focus, alignment, and continuous improvement 

·Actively manage dependencies and risks: Lead resolution of cross-team impediments, enabling the ART to deliver on its commitments 

·Champion flow performance: Lead adoption and use of flow metrics (e.g., WIP, lead time, predictability), setting expectations for value delivery and continuous improvement

·Proactively shape team conditions: Lead conversations around balancing new requests with in-flight work, resourcing, and capacity to enable sustainable delivery 

Delivery Governance, Quality & Compliance

·Lead adherence to lean governance practices: Ensure ART events and planning artifacts support compliance without undermining agility (e.g., Features are ready to start before PI Planning) 

·Raise the bar on quality and readiness: Drive ART-wide discipline in feature readiness, collaboration, and definition of done 

·Take ownership of systemic escalations: Lean in and act decisively on impediments that require senior attention 

·Budget responsibility: Track and report upwards to Portfolio Lead any external spend or budget variances related to Features for management within process and guardrails (e.g., Investment Plan Review) 

People Leadership & Capability Growth

·Act as a leader of leaders: Coach and develop Scrum Masters / Agile PMs, growing their leadership capability

·Take ownership for ART team health: Lead structured assessments, conversations, and interventions to support healthy, effective ART and teams

·Foster a continuous improvement culture: Lead retrospectives that result in real change, prioritize and track follow-through actions

·Strengthen team capability: Advocate for role clarity, training, and skills development across the ART. Be an enabler where this is required, seeking support when needed 

Stakeholder Communication & Reporting

·Lead through data and insight: Plan and communicate realistic PI Objectives, ART status, flow, and outcomes in a way that informs decision-making and inspires team and stakeholder confidence 

·Facilitate alignment at all levels: Lead longer-term horizon planning with stakeholders, looking ahead to future PIs and managing the pipeline of upstream Features, to maintain strategic alignment and support 

·Champion Lean-Agile change: Be a visible, vocal advocate for Lean-Agile values and practices within the ART and the wider organization. Constructively challenge where necessary

Experience required

  • Proven experience as a Release Train Engineer (RTE) in a scaled agile environment.

  • Track record of facilitating PI Planning and other large-scale Agile events.

  • Deep understanding of Agile and Lean principles, with hands-on experience in frameworks such as SAFe, Scrum, and Kanban.

  • Strong experience leading high-performing Agile delivery teams and driving alignment across programs.

  • Ability to identify, manage, and resolve program-level risks, dependencies, and conflicts.

  • Skilled in stakeholder communication and negotiation at senior leadership level.

  • Excellent command of verbal and written communication (English). Effective presentation style for all levels of stakeholders. 

  • Proficiency with tools such as Azure DevOps and MS Office.

  • Relevant certifications (e.g., SAFe RTE, SAFe SPC, CSM/PSM, KMP) preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience); advanced degree in IT/management a plus.

  • Background in complex, large-scale business or financial services environments desirable.
