ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for overall strategic, operational, and financial planning of the Science Center Security operation. 
  • Plan, direct, and administer the daily and long-range operations of the Security Department, by establishing and reviewing operating procedures and written policies for implementation. 
  • Develop and deploy risk management protocols, assessing and evaluating threats, vulnerabilities and other risk factors. 
  • Present opportunities for improvement in security and safety measures at all SLSC sites. Provide input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility.
  • Supervise and coach security officers to promote a spirit of teamwork, shared responsibility, service to mission, and accomplishment. Hires, mentors, terminates, trains, schedules, and oversees annual performance reviews for security officers.
  • Develop, adopt and maintain the Security Department Operations Manual, the Emergency Procedures Handbook and other safety and security-related guidelines, and coordinates training to ensure departmental familiarity with these documents and other general Science Center policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local, state and federal authorities including the St. Louis Fire and Police Departments, the St. Louis field office of the FBI, and Department of Homeland Security. Works closely with the Forest Park Rangers office and the Saint Louis University High School Security team.
  • Develop and maintain regular and on-going relationships with critical SLSC departments including Visitor Services, Exhibits, IT, Engineering, Operations, Building Services, Gallery Operations, Special Exhibits, food service provider, retail store, Taylor colleagues, etc. Assist in training and developing integrated operational and emergency protocols, as necessary.  
  • Serve as liaison with Fire and Police, conducting security, fire-prevention, safety/health inspections, assessments and surveys, and advising senior management of issues and recommending corrective actions.
  • Coordinates the services of the SLSC alarm service provider(s) for system monitoring, service, and inspections. Develop operating procedures to align with these services.
  • Serves as liaison to the institutional Safety Committee and works with Human Resources, Finance and other departments in implementing and maintaining risk-management programs.  
  • Investigates and assures reporting on security matters including accidents resulting in injuries, property damage, thefts, disruptive incidents, and others as appropriate.
  • In coordination with IT, oversees and administers the security-related software systems and tools including the CCTV (Genetec), dispatch and reporting (Omnigo), card access (Lenel), and parking systems (Flash Parking). Develop and maintain operating policies and procedures, monitoring and reporting protocols related to these systems, and oversee training in the use of these systems.
  • Perform all other work-related duties as required by the Managing Director of Operations.



Requirements

  •  Must have or be able to obtain a Private Security Officer’s License, issued by the St. Louis Police Department or St. Louis County Police Department, specifically for Saint Louis Science Center employment.
  • Minimum of seven years in security or law enforcement management or comparable experience.
  • Experience with managing video surveillance and access control systems desired.
  • Proficiency in use and application of basic computer software, such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills (English language), and the ability to interact well with a diverse range of constituents and colleagues.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends and holidays, as may be needed.

EDUCATION:

Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.


CERTIFICATES, LISENCES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Private security officer license from St. Louis City or County.
  • Certificates in CPR, AED and First Aid.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Moderate physical activity is required. When covering an officer post, may be required to stand, sit and/or walk, and climb stairs throughout a shift. 
  • Lift or move equipment. 
  • Place a person, of at least 100 pounds, in a wheelchair. 
  • Lift a small child (50 pounds) and carry in a rescue.
  • Lift and operate safely a 20-pound portable fire extinguisher.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

In addition to administrative office and security control room environments, work on security posts are inside and outside, year-round in all types of weather. Ability to work in loud, crowded areas.
