Job Summary
The Phlebotomist, Externship Lead is an essential clinical team member who provides high quality, client-centered care to our clients. They support the flow of our clinical care by providing skilled phlebotomy, urinalysis, point of care lab tests, and injections to Lyon-Martin patients. The Phlebotomist is also cross-trained in Medical Assistant duties: front desk check-in and check-out, patient rooming and performing vitals, patient education, and clinician support. They participate in quality control and infection control by leading QA activities relating to the lab. They ensure timely following up on lab results and lab errors. As the Phlebotomy Externship Lead, this position has the additional responsibility of contributing to the selection, on-boarding, precepting and evaluation of Lyon-Martin's Phlebotomy Externship students.
The Phlebotomist is expected to provide all patient care in a sensitive and non-judgmental manner, to maintain a high degree of professional competence and the highest possible ethical standards, and to function as part of a care-giving team. They, along with all staff at Lyon-Martin, are also expected to uphold and imbue in others a commitment to addressing racism, ableism, gender and sexual discrimination within the organization and our clinical practice.
Key Responsibilities
Phlebotomy
- Responsible for providing phlebotomy, urinalysis, point of care tests and injections for all appropriate appointments scheduled on the lab schedule.
- Responsible for complying with all state and federal laws and regulations and Lyon-Martin policies and procedures, but especially with regards to following provider orders, obtaining verification of dose prior to injection by licensed staff, and following Lyon-Martin’s Medical Emergencies, Rapid Response, and Incident Reporting protocols.
- Clean and sterilize lab and medical equipment using impeccable infection control technique.
- Treat all patients using trauma-informed care skills and de-escalation skills as needed.
- Maintain professionalism and complete visits in a timely manner, documenting all patient interaction and closing notes same day.
- Respond to all routine in basket messages within 72 hours, urgent messages same day.
- Package labs appropriately, store them according to appropriate temperature requirements, and ensure lab specimens are put out in time for Quest pick up.
- Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA standards at all times.
- Respect names and pronouns of clients and staff at all times, ensure this information is communicated to the team and entered appropriately in the chart.
- Perform daily chart preparation.
- Ensure timely lab result delivery by coordinating with Quest, and other third-party labs, to promptly resolve specimen and order issues.
- Assist with in-reach to schedule patients due for lab work, tests, or injections.
- With the assistance of the Charge RN, triage walk-in appointments.
Phlebotomy Externship
- Contribute to the selection, on-boarding, precepting, and evaluation of Phlebotomy Externship Students.
- Model best practices in phlebotomy techniques and compliance.
- Mentor phlebotomy externs in phlebotomy skills.
- Serve as a designated “sign-off” authority for phlebotomy externs, verifying competency and ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards
- Collaborate with supervisory staff of externs to report on phlebotomy progress and training needs without holding formal supervisor responsibilities.
Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement
- Responsible for completing and maintaining lab supply inventory, including refrigerated vaccines and medications, checking expiration dates, re-stocking as needed, and communicating with management when low on supplies well in advance so supplies may be replenished before out of stock.
- Responsible for maintaining the utmost infection control standards in the lab, including changing out sharps containers when full, ensuring no dirty instruments are left in the sink, cleaning the lab between each patient, and at the beginning and end of each day.
- Responsible for completing point of care test control tests for Quality Assurance each month.
Medical Assisting
- Provide coverage as needed as a Medical Assistant which includes:
- Manage daily schedule and clinic flow for assigned primary care provider.
- Room clients, take vitals, gather medical history and chief complaint.
- Accurately enter all relevant clinical information into Electronic Health Record.
- Perform electrocardiograms (EKG), visual testing, peak flow meter, administer nebulizer treatments with provider direction.
- Assist with gynecological procedures such as pap smears, colposcopy, IUD insertions, Nexplanon insertions, endometrial biopsies, ultrasounds, etc.
- Assist with primary care procedures such as incision & drainage, joint injections, ear lavage, etc.
- Provide health education and materials to clients, including health-related issues such as sexual health, preventative care, chronic care management, insurance coverage, referrals, follow-up care.
- Draft letters of accommodation, letters of diagnosis, letters to help update identity documents to reflect gender identity, etc. as directed by primary care provider.
- Support clinicians with client follow up care as needed.
- Cross-training with front office, and other duties, is required as needed.

Education, Knowledge, Skills:
Required:
- Phlebotomy Certificate (CPTI or CPTII) with at least two years’ experience as a Medical Assistant
- Knowledge of clinical documentation, treatment plans, and terminology.
- Experience working with lesbian, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and intersex clients
- Experience working with people with varying disabilities, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and economic statuses,
- Experience working with clients who do sex work, those experiencing homelessness, people who have challenges with mental illness and/or are using substances, those of with a history of incarceration, people of varying ages.
- Proficient in data entry and Microsoft Office programs; handles sensitive information in a confidential manner

Preferred:
- Spanish fluency (verbal)
- Basic life support (CPR) certification
- Blood Born Pathogens training completed within the past year
- Experience providing birth control, abortion, and STI counseling/education
- Experience with trauma-informed and harm-reduction models of care
- Experience using Epic
