JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for the repair and overhaul of weed eaters, chainsaws, mowers, skid loader, 2 & 4 cycle engines, hydraulics and hydraulic pumps, and other light and heavy-duty machinery and motor vehicle fleet. Supportive of the Village’s mission, values, and service/hospitality (PRIDE) expectations. Completes training as required by policy.  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Disassembles unit and inspects parts. Repairs or replaces parts as needed.
  • Overhauls or replaces carburetors, blowers, generators, pumps, mowers and other machinery.
  • Performs Missouri State vehicle inspections for all JKV vehicles and brings them into compliance.
  • Completes preventive maintenance on autos, buses, and other equipment.
  • Repairs and is knowledgeable about air conditioning systems.
  • Accountable for machinery, vehicles, power tools and supplies as issued.
  • Inspect and repair electrical system of vehicles or equipment.
  • Maintains safe work environment. Responsible for use and maintenance of appropriate safety equipment.
  • Utilizes the preventative maintenance schedule for all vehicles and power equipment.
  • Installs and repairs safety equipment, light bars, emergency beacons, and related vehicle wiring.
  • Performs diagnostic testing, preventive maintenance and repair on wheelchair lifts and ramps.
  • Diagnoses, repairs, rebuilds or replaces various types of hydraulic equipment such as pumps, hoses, cylinders, jacks and other related parts including hydraulic drive systems and related components.
  • Fabricates and/or reconstructs equipment by using gas, arc, mig, or other welding methods.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and maintains snow removal equipment such as snow blows, pumps and blowers.
  • Performs skilled mechanical repair and overhaul work on various types of fleet equipment such as automobiles, trucks and buses (both light and heavy duty), gas and diesel engines, heavy equipment such as skid loaders, tractors, golf carts, mowers, small equipment, along with all other types of on and off road power equipment in accordance with standard trade practices.
  • Maintains mechanic shop and equipment in a clean and orderly condition while keeping inventory and ordering necessary parts.
  • Adheres to all safety regulations and requirements.
  • Handles stress well and gets along with others within the workplace and with customers outside the department.
  • Maintains acceptable standards of workplace conduct.

The responsibilities described above represent the primary responsibilities of the job.  Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as warranted by business needs.  The incumbent is expected to perform all assigned responsibilities. 

 
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education: 

  • This position requires the level of education typically acquired by a course of study leading to a high school diploma or GED.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current Missouri Class B CDL Drivers license.
  • ASE in air conditioning, suspension & steering, and brakes or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Must possess a MO motor vehicle inspection certificate or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Must pass a post offer DOT physical and drug screen.
  • Must pass DOT required annual testing.

Knowledge and Skills (required unless otherwise noted):

  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Must be able to supply own tools.
  • Must have excellent time management skills, ability to multi-task and follow instructions.
  • Must be able to withstand power equipment noises.
  • Minimum of three years Mechanic experience preferred.
  • Ability to speak, read and write simple sentences, paragraphs and correspondence.

 SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The associate is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions including extreme cold temperatures typically below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour or extreme heat temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
  • The associate is subject to sufficient noise to cause the associate to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
  • The associate is subject to vibration of the extremities or whole body.
  • The associate is subject to hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • The associate is subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin:  Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.
  • The associate is subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
  • The associate is required to wear a respirator when performing certain tasks.
  • The associate frequently is in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, man holes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.
  • The associate is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
  • All associates maybe called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Heavy Work – Exerting up to 100 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
  • The associate is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or make general observations of facilities or structures.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.  Body agility is emphasized. 
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. 
  • May need to stoop/bend, kneel, crawl, reach.
  • Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • May need to push, pull, lift with regular or repetitive motion.
  • May need to pick up, pinch, type with fingers, grasp with fingers and palm.
  • May need to feel attributes of an object such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Frequent supervision from Manager of Grounds or Senior Mechanic.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

Occasionally instructs and trains others regarding care, use, maintenance and operation of existing and new equipment and tools.
