Under the general direction of a Fire Captain, a Fire Engineer drives, operates and maintains fire apparatus and related equipment; performs fire suppression activities; participates in fire prevention, training activities and station and equipment maintenance; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Position Duties
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Responds to and addresses fire and other emergency calls with members of a fire company;
Safely operates fire apparatus in both emergent and non-emergent situations;
Operates pumps, aerial apparatus, and equipment as directed and regulate water pressure;
Cleans, maintains, services and accounts for equipment;
Assists in firefighting operations, rescue, overhaul, salvage and clean-up operations;
Maintains records and prepares written reports;
Participates in an ongoing training program by individually studying technical material and attending scheduled drills and classes;
Assists in the maintenance of fire station buildings and grounds;
Assists in the training of personnel in the operation and maintenance of apparatus, equipment and vehicles;
Performs various emergency and non-emergency communications;
Administers emergency medical care to ill or injured persons;
Performs duties for fire prevention and pre-incident planning;
Assists the City Equipment Mechanic(s) with repairs and maintenance of Fire Department equipment and apparatus;
Assists Company Officers with the management and completion of their respective staff assignments; and
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of experience in fire suppression with the City of Santee and must haveSantee Fire Department Type 1 Engine Apparatus Operator certification. Candidates must also have successfully completed all of the following California State Fire Training courses by the closing deadline:
Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator 1A: Emergency Vehicle Operations
Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator 1B: Pump Operations
Company Officer 2A: HR Management
Company Officer 2D: All-Risk Command Operations
These certifications must be either uploaded at time of application or submitted to the Human Resources Department by 5:00 p.m. on October 17, 2025, to remain in the examination process. Failure to submit all required certifications by this date as outlined above will result in your disqualification from the examination process.
NOTE: Within twelve months of appointment, the Fire Engineer/Paramedic must obtain the Type 3 Engine (Brush Engine) Apparatus Operator Certification, and the Truck Company Apparatus Operator Certification.
Tentative Examination Schedule: * Written Examination: Thursday, November 6, 2025 * Manipulative Examination: Wednesday, November 12, 2025
Other Qualifications
At the time of appointment, the employee must have in their possession and continuously maintain a valid State of California Driver's License and all additional endorsements or licenses required by the State to operate fire department apparatus on roadways. A safe driving record is required and must be maintained during the period of employment. Incumbents must meet the requirements for and maintain certification at the EMT Paramedic level as established by the State of California and the San Diego County Emergency Medical Services.
Incumbents must maintain a current, valid San Diego County paramedic license.
City of Santee employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
