Work involves processing payroll and benefit transactions for the Sheriff’s Office to include multiple payrolls and/or a large volume of separate transactions such as overtime, part-time, and employee reimbursements. Reviews and processes time, attendance and related payroll reports for transmittal to Pueblo County’s central payroll administration unit. Processes benefit changes and responds to inquiries regarding benefits, processes employment related insurance actions (worker’s compensation, health, and life), and reports salary/benefit expenditures to other agencies.
Position Duties
Essential Job Functions
Operates all aspects of department payroll process and related computer programs; reconciles, balances and prepares payroll and related statements and reporting; resolves and adjusts any discrepancies.
Reviews job codes, assignment numbers, earning codes, cost centers, positions, hours, overtime, compensation time and vacation and sick accrual data for all employees in department.
Resolves payroll reporting problems by contacting reporting supervisors, researching records and checking applicable policies or rules; advises departmental staff responsible for reporting all payroll information regarding rules and procedures.
Reviews and inputs payroll changes including, but not limited to, new hires, reclassified employees, promotions, transfers, salary increases, terminations, vacation payouts, sick payouts, compensation time payouts and deductions.
Performs manual calculations.
Provides payroll and related employment information to employees and persons inquiring about work with the department.
Processes benefit actions and informs employees and others regarding benefits plans and provisions.
Processes and codes workers’ compensation entries, Family Medical Leave Act, Employee Leave entries, Sick Bank entries and other employee paperwork and maintains related files and records.
Conducts new hire orientation regarding payroll and benefits.
Conducts exit interviews ensuring that proper forms and documents are prepared.
Maintains payroll documentation and personnel files.
Maintains statistical data and prepares statistical reports.
Set ups and maintains special accounts involving the processing of receivables and payables as necessary.
Keeps current on policy/procedural changes and regulatory changes and considers the impact on the current process.
Sorts and files all payroll and human resources documentation on a regular basis.
Performs routine payroll and human resources clerical assignments.
Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.
General Requirements
Fills in for other staff as necessary and/or required.
Attends meetings, classes and trainings as required or requested by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be at least 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, and a valid driver’s license. Candidates must be currently employed with Pueblo County. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible office/clerical experience to include one year of payroll processing experience.
The selection process includes, but is not limited to, an interview. Prior to employment, candidates will complete a background investigation, polygraph examination, and physical examination to include a drug screen. The expected duration of the selection process will not normally exceed two months. Candidates not selected may reapply in the future. Although the entire range is posted, the rate of pay for this position starts at $21.25 per hour. This posting may be used to fill multiple openings.
