SUMMARY

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office provides the care, custody, control, and rehabilitation

The Lieutenant is a supervisory correctional role serving as second-in-command within a

unit or division at the Orleans Justice Center or a similar facility, or in special assignments

of a technical or administrative nature; and related work as required.

In this supervisory role, the incumbent acts as second-in-command of a correctional

division or shift, assisting the commanding officer with supervisory tasks and assuming

full command in their absence. Duties involve overseeing sergeants on an assigned shift,

handling more serious incidents or complaints, conducting investigations, and ensuring

compliance with rules and policies. This role requires significant discretion, leadership,

and decision-making, particularly during emergencies. Work is outlined through oral and

written directives, standard operating procedures, and orders from higher-ranking

officials, with performance reviewed through observations, inspections, and report

evaluations.

SALARY

The salary for the Lieutenant will be aligned accordingly and commensurate with an

applicant’s knowledge, skills, experience, certifications and education requirements of the

subject position.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Job Duties & Functions:

• Assumes command of a unit or division in the absence of the commanding officer.

• Supervises the activities of sergeants, correctional officers, and other staff; inspects

personnel to ensure compliance with policies and standards.

• Plans, organizes, and assigns duties to sergeants, ensuring optimal deployment of

staff and addressing any performance issues.

*Note: To be certified for promotion to Sergeant, candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution. Official transcripts or diplomas must be submitted before certification.

Note on Eligibility for Promotion

Candidates with sustained complaints related to discrimination, retaliation, excessive use of force, or serious misconduct may be ineligible for promotion for two (2) years following the completion of any disciplinary penalties. Candidates under investigation for serious misconduct may also be ineligible.
