Position: Entry-Level Civil Engineer/Technician
Reports to: Philadelphia Branch Manager
General Qualities:
The ideal candidate is a motivated and detail-oriented individual with a strong interest in civil design and accessibility improvements. This person should have a desire to learn the fundamentals of ADA curb ramp design, site/civil design, grading, and compliance with Department of Streets, PennDOT, and other municipal standards.
They should demonstrate:
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
- Eagerness to learn from experienced engineers in a collaborative team environment.
- Basic understanding of civil engineering or drafting principles, particularly related to site design, grading, or transportation infrastructure.
- Proficiency or interest in learning AutoCAD Civil 3D and other design software used for curb ramp layout, plan preparation, and quantity takeoffs.
- Good organizational and communication skills, with the ability to follow instructions and manage multiple tasks under supervision.
- A positive, professional attitude and willingness to take initiative and grow within the company.

Responsibilities:
This position will start with a focus on ADA curb ramp design but will also include opportunities to contribute to a wide range of civil engineering projects. The candidate will work closely with experienced engineers and technicians to gain hands-on experience in roadway design, drafting, and construction documentation.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Preparing ADA curb ramp design plans, including grading, layout, and dimensioning in accordance with PennDOT and City of Philadelphia standards.
- Assisting with the preparation of engineering drawings, details, and quantity takeoffs for transportation and site improvement projects.
- Supporting field data collection and survey documentation for existing curb ramps and sidewalks.
- Coordinating with senior engineers, project managers, and other design staff to ensure consistency and accuracy in plan preparation.
- Reviewing field measurements, photographs, and survey data to verify compliance with ADA and PROWAG requirements.
- Participating in project meetings and internal QA/QC reviews to support the design development process.
- Contributing to various civil/site design tasks, including roadway, utility, and drainage layouts, as workload and experience grow.
Requirements
KSE is seeking an individual who combines technical aptitude with a willingness to learn. This position is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career professional looking to gain real-world experience and grow into a full-time design or engineering role.
Desired qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or an Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related field.
- 0–3 years of experience in civil engineering design, drafting, or transportation-related work (internship or co-op experience a plus).
- Experience or familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred; training will be provided for motivated candidates.
- Working knowledge or willingness to learn ADA design standards, PennDOT Design Manuals, and Philadelphia Streets Department ramp design criteria.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, survey data, and field sketches.
- Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills.
- Eligibility to work in the United States; valid driver’s license preferred for field work.
