Healthy Habits provides education and technical assistance to support healthy eating and physical activity among elementary school-aged children and their families. The overall goal of Healthy Habits is to reduce the risks and impacts of obesity in communities of need. Healthy Habits is a Signature Community Benefit program.
The Healthy Habits Internship role will provide current graduate students the opportunity to learn about community health programs through guided mentorship, experiential learning, and supervised teaching. Functioning under the supervision and direction of the Associate Director of Healthy Habits, the Intern (Per Diem) will develop a deep understanding of the Healthy Habits program including curriculum development, teaching and facilitation, and program evaluation. By the end of the internship, the intern will have had the opportunity to:
- Learn from CSMC staff including the Health Habits Team.
- Learn about the Healthy Habits program including program development and administration.
- Work in a community-based setting with school aged children within Los Angeles Unified School District.
- Learn and teach an evidence-based Health Education Curriculum.
Healthy interns will be onboarded at the beginning of the school year (September 2025) and will be learning and training under a full-time health educator in the community at Healthy Habits Partner LAUSD Schools. Interns will be shadowing educators at their Healthy Habits classes October 2025-August 2026. With continuous mentorship and guidance, the goal is for the intern to learn the Healthy Habits curriculum and be able to teach and facilitate Healthy Habits classes under the guidance of Healthy Habits lead staff.
To start, the intern’s role will primarily include observing, shadowing, and training on Healthy Habits curriculum and teaching (October 2025-January 2026). Once the intern is properly trained and assigned health educator and supervisor have deemed intern to be ready and comfortable interns may be given the opportunity to teach a Healthy Habits class on their own (February 2026-August 2026). The intern’s activities will include supervised and guided teaching of the Healthy Habits curriculum at partner sites during Weekdays (12-20 hours per week, with commitment of at least one full 8hr shift per week). Additional internship activities may include collecting and recording evaluation data per the program’s evaluation plan, supporting Healthy Habits school events, and limited administrative tasks related to their internship activities.
By August 2026 the goal is for intern to have learned the Healthy Habits curriculum, gained experience as a health educator in a community based setting, gained experience working and teaching evidenced-based health education curriculum to elementary school aged children at LAUSD partner schools and learned/gained experience being a part of Cedars-Sinai Community benefit Healthy Habits program and impact on historically disadvantaged communities. The Intern will receive ongoing mentorship and supervision from the Healthy Habits lead staff throughout the internship.
This position is for the 2025-2026 school year (October 2025– August 2026)
Qualifications
Required Education & Experience:
- Be 18 years of age or older and have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, preferably in nutrition, public health, community health, kinesiology or a related field.
- Have transportation to travel daily to community sites.
- Reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern appointment.
- Be computer literate, this includes solid understanding of Windows or comparable system, presentation development, email, browsers, spreadsheets, etc.
Preferred Education & Experience:
- Currently enrolled in a graduate public health program with an accredited school of public health preferred. Preferred field are Public Health, Evaluation, Community Health, Public Policy or a related field.
- Minimum of two years’ experience working in community health settings preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments.
- Ability to use sound judgment in a well-organized manner.
- Attention to detail and ability to work well with colleagues, senior staff and community partners.
