The Sequoia Union High School District (SUHSD) serves more than 9,000 students in grades 9 through 12 from multiple diverse communities in the mid-Peninsula region between San Francisco and San Jose. Job Summary
2 nights a week / 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Limited remote hours are possible.
The Adult School Counselor supports students and staff in the High School Equivalency (HSE), High School Diploma (HSD), and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs at Sequoia Adult School. The school is located in Menlo Park, about 25 miles south of San Francisco.
The candidate provides academic counseling to adult students across three programs, assessing their academic needs, providing intake orientations, ensuring they are placed appropriately, and assisting them in addressing barriers to learning. The Adult School Counselor works closely with adult school transition staff to support students as they transition to college, training or employment. In addition, the counselor provides socio-emotional counseling to students and provides access to community support. The person in this position collaborates with counselors at district high schools to support students transferring to adult school.
The candidate also works closely with teachers and administration to monitor student progress and completions and to intervene as needed. The role also supports teachers in the programs by providing guidance and support on student issues, data collection, and credit tracking. This position requires evening work two nights a week and is part of the school’s leadership team.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum:
- B.A. (B.S.)
- Valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential - School Counseling
- Must be able to work two evening shifts per week 1:00 - 9:00 pm
Preferred:
- Bilingual in Spanish
- Master's Degree
- Valid California Teaching Credential in subjects relevant to HSD/HSE or teaching experience with adult learners
- Three years of experience in adult schools or equivalent
- Knowledge of adult education database systems such as ASAP and TOPSpro Enterprise
- Knowledge of online learning platforms such as Edgenuity and Canvas

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
HSE/ HSD Programs
- Coordinate student intervention meetings
- Organize and conduct enrollments for district school referrals
- Create student education plans and monitor progress
- Coordinate enrollment & orientations
ESL Program
- Facilitate high school exemption student enrollment and monitor student progress
- Organize and conduct enrollments for district school referrals
- Develop counseling programs to support the young adult population
- Coordinate student intervention meetings
- Support with enrollment & orientations
Student Support Services
- Coordinate support services to special populations
- Facilitate student accommodations
- Provide support for Foster youth student enrollment and monitor progress
- Establish partnerships with community organizations and community college partners
- Attend San Mateo County adult education consortium meetings as assigned
- Liaison between the adult school and district counselors
